I’m planning to drive my guests to and from my Experience in Bali. Do I need a license or registration to allow me to do this?

Yes. Before driving any guests you must ensure that:

• you have a valid driving license (Surat Izin Mengemudi or SIM); and
• your vehicle has a vehicle registration certificate (Surat Tanda Nomor Kendaraan or STNK).

Failure to comply with any or all of these requirements may lead to a fine and/or imprisonment.

In addition, your vehicle may be classified as a vehicle for tourism transportation, for which you will require a license. Tourism transportation covers a passenger cars (a passenger transportation vehicle with maximum 8 seats including the driver's seat, and the weight is less than 3,500 kg) and a bus (a passenger transportation vehicle with more than 8 seats including the driver's seat, and the weight is more than 3,500 kg) used to transport persons to and from a tourist destination.

Here is an example where you and your vehicle are likely to be classified as providing tourism transportation:

• I am an Experience Host, and I want to bring travelers around the Ubud area for a sightseeing tour. I will be driving them to several tourist spots as part of the sightseeing tour.

Here are some examples where you are unlikely to be classified as providing tourism transportation:

• I will use a licensed taxi or a licensed transportation provider to pick up and drop guests from Airbnb listings or a meeting point in Bali.
• I will drive my guests using a passenger car as a key part of the Experience (for example, vintage car driving in Bali).
• I will drive my guests using a passenger car as an ancillary or complementary part of the Experience (for example, visiting beaches by car near Singaraja for driftwood collecting, or picking up and dropping guests from Airbnb listings or a meeting point in Bali).

If you are considered to be operating tourism transportation, you will need to comply with the Minister of Transportation Regulation No. 108 of 2017 on the Implementation of Passenger Transportation with Public Motorized Vehicles in a Non-Fixed Route and obtain the appropriate licenses.

My experience involves going to a couple of separate venues, which are not walking distance from each other. I want to provide transportation between the two venues. I plan to order a licensed taxi or other licensed form of transportation. I do not plan to charge anything for the transportation. Do I need a specific license to allow me to do this?

You would not need a license to book and pay for transportation for your guests. However, we recommend that you only make bookings with licensed transport providers, and that you make it clear to your guests which transport provider the booking has been made with.
