Arguably the most rewarding day trip experience out of Lisbon is a visit to the wonderfully romantic town of Sintra, a direct 40-minute rail journey from the city center. Nestling in the foothills of the rugged Serra de Sintra - a rolling landscape of verdant woodland peppered with outcrops of granite - this enchanting destination unfolds as a scenic picture book of regal royal palaces, mysterious mansions, and a mighty Moorish castle dating from the 8th century.

If you enjoy nature and charming places, you must visit Sintra. Also taste the "travesseiros" or the "queijadas de Sintra", two local delicacies

Sintra is the true and unique capital of Romanticism. – Sintra is the only place in the country in which History has become a garden, because all its legends converge there and its very monuments speak less of the past than of an eternal present of greenery. The memory even of tragedy vanishes in the air or grows green again in the ivy of an ancient wall. In Sintra one does not die one passes alive to the other side, because death is impossible in the vigour of beauty. And the memory of what has passed remains in it to give succour. 'Louvar Amar' (To Praise, To Love), Vergílio Ferreira

Sintra, it is one of those places full of magic and mystery where nature and man combined into such a perfect symbiosis that UNESCO classified it as a World Heritage site. In the main square we see the Palace of the Village with its two conical chimneys. Dating back to the late 14th century, it was the summer resort of many kings throughout the history of Portugal. The Palace of Quinta da Regaleira constitutes one of the most surprising monuments of Sintra. Situated at the end of the historic center of the Village, it was built between 1904 and 1910, in the final period of the monarchy. Pena Palace (Palácio da Pena) is the most complete and remarkable example of the Portuguese architecture of Romanticism. Other places to visit: - Castle of the Moors (Castelo dos Mouros) - Castanheiros Park (Parque dos Castanheiros) - Chalet of the Countess of Edla (Chalet da Condessa D’Edla) - Park and Palace of Monserrate (Parque de Monserrate) - Convent of the Capuchos (Convento dos Capuchos) You cannot miss to taste the famous "Queijadas de Sintra" (“cheese cake pastry”) and "Travesseiros" at the "Piriquita" cafe.
