I personally can never resist the smell of fresh home made cookies. Best cookies in town ... or better ... in the world!

Did you know Antwerp is called the 'Koekestad', which literally means Cookiecity? This tiny little bakery is known for it's delicious handmade biscuits, in particular what we call 'Antwerpse handjes', a butter/almond cookie shaped in the form of a hand, a tradition that only a few certified bakers are entitled to. Our Antwerp Hands are one of the most known regional products from Antwerp. The name of these little treats refers to a folk tale about how the city got its name. According to legend, a giant called Druon Antigoon exacted a heavy toll from any seafarer crossing the river Schelde in Antwerp. If the sailors refused to pay, Antigoon mercilessly chopped off one of their hands. A brave Roman soldier called Silvius Brabo battled and killed the giant. He then chopped off the giant's hand and threw it in the Schelde. This is how the Dutch term 'hand werpen' (throw a hand) eventually became 'Antwerpen' (Antwerp). And why a hand became the symbol of the city. Tip: don't buy too many cookies, they don't come cheap..
