Maryland Heights is the highest mountain overlooking Harpers Ferry. Its southern face is a 300-foot vertical cliff that towers over the Potomac River, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The mountain is steep, rugged, and primitive - with a thick veneer of Civil War history.

This is a great moderately difficult hike to view Harpers Ferry from across the river.

There are several hikes around the Harpers Ferry area. This is by far our favorite. About one hour up, one hour down. Easy enough to do in regular shoes, but definitely a hike. Make sure to get all the way to the top of the lookout. Absolutely beautiful, soaring views of the town of Harpers Ferry and the confluence of the Shenandoah and the Potomac. Bring a camera! The downside is the parking at the trailhead is a nightmare. There are only like 12 spots, and they're along a road that is not easy to turn around on. The "easiest" way to access it is to walk across the bridge from Historic Harpers Ferry. That just takes a little more time.
