It feels like a fun mistake, like you found something you shouldn’t have—a dark, Disneyesque pirate-themed shop of cupboards full of drawers of sand and trinkets. In the back there’s a writing center for school programs, tutoring, college essay workshops. The pirate part exists because the area is zoned for retail and they have to have some kind of store. They sell collections of stories students in their programs have written, as well as the Believer magazine and books by McSweeney’s press, another project of cofounder Dave Eggers. They also just opened a new space with an explorer-themed storefront in the Tenderloin called King Carl’s Emporium.
