Born as a private residence at the beginning of the 20th century, it looked like a simple palace, without its particular turrets. In 1910 it was transformed into a hotel. But it is in the 20s and 30s that the Grand Hotel Royal becomes one of the most prestigious hotels in the city, and in Europe. Viareggio was the first most important seaside resort in Europe. Thanks to the "miracle" of the architect Belluomini, the Royal was transformed into the marvelous building it is today. Raised three floors and enriched by two turrets (now the "Ondina" and "Burlamacco" suites), it was decorated together with Galileo Chini, creating a true jewel of liberty. Having become one of the 50 best hotels in the world, the Royal became a meeting place for the high society of the time. In the main hall, "crystal room", in the reading rooms, or in the garden, guests sat, listening to music, reading or discussing. Sheikhs, royals of Belgium and Russia, Mussolini, Pirandello and D'Annunzio. But also the most important people of the show business, culture and nobility of the time. The life of the Royal was marked by the Carnival themed parties, in which all the ladies had to rigorously dress in gold and red (the colors of the Royal). A veranda (600sqm), the garden (10,000sqm) and a greenhouse (for the flowers that had to adorn the tables). Statues and plays of light allowed to enjoy a very suggestive atmosphere. Today, instead of the greenhouse, there is the only outdoor pool among the hotels in Viareggio. Viareggio was the world capital of tourism, the Pearl of Versilia, a status symbol. Viareggio was the pinnacle of artistic, social and seaside life.
