A well know land mark on the Oregon, Mormon & California emigrant trails. Many emigrants craved their names & dates as they passed thru during the mid 1800's.
A historical favorite. A huge rock where people carved their names while traveling on the Oregon trail.
This is one of the most noted landmarks on the emigrant trails. Legend says that travelers heading west needed to reach this spot by July 4th if they were to ever reach the west before inclement weather set in, and that is where the name came from. It's name actually came from a party of fur trappers that camped there on July 4, 1824.
About an hour out of town heading south, independence rock is a unique way to touch history. You can climb the rock and look at the names inscribed by pioneers traveling west to California, Oregon and Utah.
