This pub is next to and underneath 1789, and it is a campus tradition going back to 1962. From the rowing memorabilia to the names of student bartenders in brass on the bar, there's a lot to absorb. Somewhat creative pub fare is usually above average, although it can vary. TBH I don't go much after 24 years here, because I got tired of running into awkward coworkers, but for visitors to Georgetown it should truly not be missed. Reservations are helpful.

Situated near the entrance of Georgetown University campus, The Tombs doubles as a sporting saloon and a neighborhood restaurant. Vintage crew and sporting prints, colorful sweeps, high-backed booths, and leaded glass set the tone. By day and early evening, The Tombs is a favorite with University faculty and neighbors. Later at night, it becomes a popular gathering place for Georgetown students. Complementing the comfortable surroundings is a simple, affordable menu of burgers, hearty soups and salads, daily specials and house made desserts. The movie St. Elmo’s Fire modeled its pub from this favorite Georgetown hangout; it was also filmed for The Exorcist.

Lively place. A favorite of Georgetown students. Great, tasty and affordable prices. After 11 PM the place offers live music on some days of the week.
