The state capitol and house of government of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The reflective gold dome was painted green during WWII to protect from bombing attacks, then regilded after the war.
If you come to Boston and don't see the beautiful gold dome, you're missing out!
The Massachusetts State House was completed in 1798, and is widely acclaimed as one of the more magnificent public buildings in the country. The land for the State House was originally used as John Hancock’s cow pasture. Its most distinct feature, the golden dome, was once made of wood, but was later overlaid with copper by Paul Revere. It was covered with 23-karat gold leaf for the first time in 1874 and was painted grey during World War II to protect the city from bombing attacks. The State House dome was most recently gilded in 1997. FREE turs are available Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
