It's true that cheaper crafts are to be found around Mexico City, but Fonart ensures quality and provenance—as well as a fair wage paid to artisans—with all of the objects on sale at its stores around the city, including this one. Fonart represents the National Fund for the Development of Handcrafts, and in addition to providing support to artists and artisans, the group manages several boutiques that stock the best and most beautiful goods that represent the rich array of Mexico's creative traditions. Items to look for include pottery and claywork (check out the colorful, intricately crafted árboles de vida, or trees of life), weaving, and metalwork.
