Here are some of my favorite places to eat in the city!
This moderately priced French cuisine restaurant is a tiny, trendy bistro that is spectacularly delicious! Plus then you're in the Hayes District with great shopping, eateries, and fun.

A terrific "hole in the wall" Vietnamese Deli. It's super cheap but so delicious. In the Hayes District, near City Hall and the Opera House

John's Grill, which Esquire magazine called one of America's top 10 restaurants, is as much a historic fixture of San Francisco as the Golden Gate bridge and the cable cars. THis restaurant shows up in Dash Hammett's novel The Maltese Falcon, as well as the Humphrey Bogart movie. Come for lunch or dinner and you’re likely to rub shoulders with the mayor, a police chief or two, a movie star or a huddle of technology titans.

This is such a classic San Francisco eatery! You will feel transported to a 1940's lunch counter. Great food, good service, and adorable ambiance. This is within walking distance of The Canterbury, the Donatello, and Union Square

This is the perfect place for a quick bite if you're staying at the Canterbury! Just 2 doors down from the hotel, it offers breakfast, lunch and dinner that are, frankly, delicious!

Here's a really nice sushi place next door to the Canterbury Hotel. Great food and pleasant staff. If Japanese food is what you're looking for, you'll be happy here!

For those staying at the Donatello Resort, this is a great breakfast/lunch diner with huge meals at very affordable prices. It's small though so you may need to wait to get in. Great takeout place.

I resisted visiting this place because it doesn't look like much from the outside, but just inside the doors are all kinds of affordable, fast, delicious foods! It's 1 block from the Donatello and 2 blocks from the Canterbury, so an easy walk from both and well worth it! We've only been there for breakfast, but have loved all the breakfast dishes and crepes we've tried! I wasn't crazy about the latte, but the iced chai was delish! Nothing over $16 at the time of this posting and the portions are LARGE.

The Museum of Ice Cream is an interactive art exhibit with ice cream and candy themed exhibits, all brightly colored, in a maze of rooms containing a pool filled with rainbow sprinkles, a candy cave, a unicorn among other things. The museum is a really good place for family to spend their time as both adults and kids will have enjoy the experience. Everything in the museum is made for aesthetically pleasing photos so whether you are an seasoned Instagrammer or just want to share your fun experience with friends and family, there will be no shortage of photo opportunities. As you go through different rooms in the museum, you are offered numerous free tastings throughout.

Visit the array of gardens, lakes, trails, museums, and monuments each year. Some of the most popular attractions are clustered to the east, including the de Young art museum, the California Academy of Sciences, and the Japanese Tea Garden. A little farther on is Stow Lake, the largest body of water in the park and a good spot for boating and strolling. Just past Spreckels Lake is a bizarre sight: a herd of American bison. Generations of these iconic beasts have been kept in the park since 1892; they mostly stand around the paddock like idling, hairy bulldozers. Children enjoy seeing the Dutch Windmill at the west edge; they may not be so fussed about the nearby Tulip Garden, but they’ll like the waterfowl pond in the Botanical Garden and the carnivorous plants in the Conservatory of Flowers. There are three playgrounds, too; the Koret contains a colorful working carousel from 1914. Active visitors can tour the park by Segway or check out the golf course, the disc golf course, or the archery field. Festivals take place throughout the year, and the Music Concourse hosts free concerts on Sundays in the summer.

One of my favorite places in the city! The art museum is gorgeous with amazing exhibits. The cafeteria is the perfect place to slow down with a good cup of coffee and amazing views. The grounds are "lands end", right on the Bay and just so beautiful! Great place for hiking and biking and just relaxing.

This smaller aquarium is easy to navigate and very manageable. Do NOT miss the river otters...they are the stars in my opinion. Plus, you're right at Pier 39 with many restaurants and shops. Just good fun.

This is just one more San Francisco attraction that is weird and wonderful. You will walk a lot on this tour, so bring comfy shoes and a jacket (it gets cold on the Bay). https://www.alcatrazislandtickets.com/Alcatraz-Tours/?msclkid=34531a35e3e8139bae877a8e73c0e018

This unsung hero has beautiful buildings including City Hall and the Opera House. The Asian Museum and library are so nice too (right in the plaza area). I love seeing people doing Tai Chi in the plaza in the morning. Within walking distance of trendy Hayes District with many wonderful eateries and shops.

Sometimes you just have to relax and join all the other tourists! You're going to have a lot of fun with street performers, many souvenir shops, and yes, delicious and fresh seafood. If you don't choose to have clam chowder from a cart on the treat, you may want to treat yourself to terrific seafood dinner at one of the classic seafood places. Our favorite is the Franciscan Crab Restaurant right on the water. It will be a memorable meal with a beautiful view and great wait staff.

Fun little place you can walk to from the base of Fisherman's Wharf. Treat yourself to a wonderful seafood dinner at McKormick (wait for a table with a view!) and then walk up to the original Ghirardelli ice cream shop for a monster sundae. They typically have activities for children/families in the square, plus some really fun shops.

cable cars

OK, if this is your first time in the SF, you just have to. Or if you're like me, EVERY time you visit the city, you have to! Most people start at Powell and Market (just a couple of blocks south of Union Square) and ride to Fisherman's Wharf. You can purchase a single ride, or if you know you're going to want many rides, you can purchase day passes. There are 3 cable car lines...one goes through Chinatown and one goes straight down to Fisherman's Wharf. But all are shut down during COVID. Fingers crossed for you! Wear comfy shoes because there will be a wait to get on at both ends.
