Royal Life Saving’s top tips: Keep Watch
1
Supervise
Actively supervise children of all ages. Young children should be kept within arm's reach, while older children still require constant active supervision. No phones. No distractions.
2
Restrict
Make sure fences and gates are secure, self-closing and never propped open. Portable pools need fencing too.
3
Teach
Teach children water safety rules, but remember an adult keeping watch is always essential.
4
Respond
Learn CPR and keep a phone nearby to call Triple Zero (000). Every second counts.
5
Before
Check the pool area before you swim: know where the rescue equipment and CPR chart are, where the depth markers are and report any gaps or holes in the fence to your Host.
6
After
When you leave, remove toys from the water, move climbable objects away from the fence, and check the gate has closed behind you.

Drowning happens quickly and silently, so supervision is the single most important thing you can do around water.
Keep children supervised around all water, including bathtubs, spa pools, dams and ponds.
