Beaches in Newquay

Information on the beaches in Newquay - make sure you take a look at the tips at the bottom - some practical and some fun.
Five minutes from Broad Street, it's the closest beach to Gull Cottage. Newquay's most sheltered beach lies nestled against the harbour in the lee of Towan Head. Hence smaller waves here, making it a great place for families. The Island is perhaps the most iconic feature of the beach. Built in 1901, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, stayed there. At low tide, Towan's sand connects with Great Western beach and the rest of Newquay Bay's beaches to form a continuous 2 mile beach stretch. At high tide, Towan shrinks, becoming a cosy cove. Running along the back of the beach is a raised promenade which leads to the grassy clifftop lawns of Killacourt. As well as being located on the town's doorstep there are plenty of facilities on and around the beach. **MY TIPS: 1. Dog friendly beach year-round. 2. Lifeguard service during the summer months. 3. Check tide times before walking across the beaches - Available on your phone - Tide times available - on the "My Tide Times" app or online tidetimes(.org.)uk - please stay safe. 4. On Towan beach, seagulls can be a nuisance, so protect any food you intend to eat. They are tricky customers and this year I lost my own ice cream. (note never ever leave food unattended anywhere in Newquay - they are waiting) 5. I love wild swimming on Towan, why not take a morning dip?

Though it is close to the centre of Newquay, the beach is still one of the quieter ones. Rock pools are a great place to explore, and you can walk to all the nearby beaches at low tide. It is also popular with beginner surfers. High cliffs protect the beach from the wind, but it is shaded later in the afternoon, so sunbathing isn’t always ideal. **MY TIPS: The Great Western Hotel up on the cliffs overlooking the beach is a nice place to eat and enjoy the view over to Towan Head and the Harbour. Winter or summer. 1. This is a dog friendly beach year-round. 2. Check tide times before taking walks across the beaches - Available on your phone - Tide times available - on the "My Tide Times" app or online tidetimes(.org.)uk - please stay safe. 3. Lifeguard service during the summer months. 4. On a stormy winters day tuck yourself away in the Great Western Hotel up on the cliffs overlooking the beach - great food summer or winter and fabulous views of Towan Head, the Harbour and beaches.

Tolcarne is one of four beaches that meet at low tide to create Newquay's famed mile of golden sand. It's surrounded on three sides by tall cliffs, sandwiched between Great Western and Lusty Glaze. Great Western beach is accessible at low tide. At high, there's a steep flight of steps The beach shop has buckets, spades, wetsuits, boogie boards, sun cream, swim suits, and beach games for the perfect beach day. You can hire beach huts, windbreaks, loungers, surf & body boards, wetsuits & accessories there. The surf school offers individual and group lessons for beginners and intermediates. **MY TIPS: 1. You can walk across the beaches at the waterline with your dog year-round, but the beach itself allows dogs between April 30th - October 1st. 2. Lifeguard service during the summer months. 3. Cafe Favourites

Fern Pit Cafe (and Ferry) offers some of Newquay's best views. It is a family business. Tip 1: My first tip is to try their delicious crab sandwiches - a little pricey, but so worth it. They sell local crab and lobster salads caught by their own boat, Excelsior! Tip 2: You can walk off that cream tea on Crantock Beach or The Gannel when the tide is out. Jam with cream on top, the Cornish way. Do it right.

Sprout is a health food store and cafe offering ethically sourced food, coffee, and goods, and it's small cafe has seating inside and out. Located just off the main street, tucked down an alleyway, my mum and I love sitting out in the little garden for lunch (and delicious cake), enjoying the peace and quiet. You'd never know you were in the hustle and bustle of Newquay.

Wet Weather ideas

Newquay's Waterworld is a place for fun, fitness and a splashing time for all the family to enjoy! As well as a standard 6 Lane 25 metre swimming pool there is the "Tropical Fun Pool". Here water-based fun is the order of the day. There are 2 water flumes (big and small) and a whole host of other exciting features such as; the snake floatie, water play hut with cannon and tipper, erupting volcano and snake fountain. In short, there should be something to appeal to all ages from toddlers up. As this is one of Newquay's best wet weather things-to-do it can get more than a little busy on rainy days. On the flip-side if you fancy a change from the beach and the weather is fine it should be nice and quiet. In addition to all the water activities there is also a 50 station gym along with two fitness studios at the centre.

Tides - take care

To explore this beautiful coastline, it is first critical to Know the Tides for the beach you're visiting. The tide rises and recedes every 12 hours and 25 minutes, so each day the tide times are a little different! Available on your phone - Tide times available - on the "My Tide Times" app or online tidetimes(.org.)uk - please stay safe.

Park your car and get the bus!

🚌 There’s never been a better time to travel by bus! I know I can't drive - this is excellent! Cornwall has one of the newest bus fleets in the country, and with adult day fares capped at just £5 for unlimited travel on any bus, anywhere within Cornwall, catching the bus instead of taking the car is not just greener - it's great value too.
