Food scene

We enjoyed the Loaded Tater Tots, the Country Fried Chicken, and the BBQ ribs. Our waitress said that she would stay away from the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich as it was a bit chewy.

Here they specialize in a few things, we loved the fried catfish and loved the fried chicken. The Mark Twain meal gives you a little bit of both. They also serve with every meal what they call “vittles” which was some coleslaw, a basket of hush puppies, white beans, and some pickles. Also don’t sleep on a side of Boom Boom sauce, its got a nice kick and went well with our fries and catfish.

I grew up in San Antonio, Texas and was very surprised by how good this place was. We really enjoyed the Loco Dip, Pina Loca, Tacos Al Pastor & the Burrito Tejano.

This is a 6-mile round trip hike that can be continued further to Mount LeConte making it an 11-mile hike. Alum Cave Trail starts out as an easy walk along the Alum Cave Creek with many opportunities to stop for a photo opportunity. At 1.3 miles in you will arrive at Arch Rock and the trail passes right through the natural arch. At mile 2 you will arrive at inspiration point which offers sweeping views over the Smokys. Shortly after inspiration point at about mile 3, you will arrive at Alum Cave Bluff. If you want to stop here and turn around you can, or you can continue on to Monte LeConte.

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a 5.5 mile one-way loop that allows you to take in the scenery from your car. It offers views of mountain streams, an old-growth forest, log cabins, grist mills, and my favorite, the sunset. Even though on many parts of the road there’s too much vegetation to catch a good view of the sunset, if you bear right near the end of the trail, you’ll run into lookout points that offer fantastic views. You will also find many hikes to waterfalls along this route including: Grotto Falls, Rainbows Falls, and Baskins Creek Falls.

Cades Cove is a loop road that takes you on a drive through the valley which was home to many settlers prior to the days of the national park. The drive can get quite crowded in the summertime with lots of families.

It is not as easily accessible as the other waterfalls on the list below. That means less crowds and less families will likely be on the trail. That being said, you are signing yourself up for an 8-mile round trip hike to enjoy the Ramsey Cascade Falls. Worth it for this 100-ft. waterfall?

The Grotto Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a unique 25-foot waterfall that you can actually walk behind. This waterfall is accessed by the Trillium Gap Trail to Grotto Falls which is a moderate 2.6 mile hike round-trip and mostly shaded with tree cover the entire way making it perfect for a warm sunny day. The National Park Service has noted that black bears are active in this area, so it is important to know what you would do if you encountered a black bear.

One of the most famous waterfalls in the Smoky Mountains National Park is Laurel Falls. Laurel Falls is accessed by the Laurel Falls Trail which is roughly 3 miles and considered moderate. This waterfall consists of an upper and a lower section, divided by a walkway which crosses the stream at the base of the upper falls. Laurel Falls is one of the most popular destinations in the park and parking at the trailhead is limited, so arrive early and on a weekday if possible.

The Charles Bunion via Appalachian Trail is an 8-mile out and back trail in the Smoky Mountains. The trail starts out gradual for the first mile and is mostly tree covered, however there are a few spots along the way were the trees open and you get a view. A mile past the Ice Water Spring Appalachian Trail Shelter, you will continue onto a side trail that is well marked pointing you toward Charles Bunion. Be on the look-out for Elk! There has been numerous spotting reported in this area.
