Welcome! Are you an enthusiast for African American history and culture? On this tour we will visit over a dozen sites, and the tour ends with a marvelous soul food meal. I will show and explain heritage sites within the historic Shaw community surrounding Howard University in northwest Washington, DC. SHAW COMMUNITY (WASHINGTON, DC) The Shaw community is named in honor of American Civil War Colonel Robert Gould Shaw of the 54th Massachusetts in the US Civil War. Howard University is named after U.S. Civil War General Oliver Otis Howard. The Shaw community emerged after the Civil War with homes, banks, churches, and more. Shaw declined with the 'uprising' of 1968, a national reaction to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The community lie in ruin until new construction or new investment until 2008. Many tourists have been unaware of these sites until the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in 2016. SOUL FOOD Soul food is the ethnic food for African Americans (Aframericans). The food holds history, tradition and celebrates our freedom. There is also vegan soul food. All the sites are within walking distance. I do not prepare the food. It is prepared by a professional soul food chef. I will be hosting a 1 and 1/2 tour of the National Gallery of Art. I will be talking about the architecture of the building, how the Museum acquired the paintings. Most importantly the paintings themselves. The guests will leave A better understanding of art. Often times people who visit the National Gallery get Masterpiece overload. I'll be teaching them how to enjoy their surroundings and understand the surroundings and which they are viewing the art. Guests we leave understanding the difference between each art movement. As well, guests will be able to understand why the museum felt the need to acquire these pieces of Art.

This evening bike tour takes you to the National Mall and Potomac Tidal Basin when the monuments are less crowded, the air is cooler, and the views are magnificent. You'll arrive 15 minutes to tour time to check-in and be fitted on your bike. Our hybrid bikes are perfect for city riding and we have a variety of sizes to fit you - no matter how tall or small. Our bikes have a handle bar bag and rack so you can store all the essentials - phone, keys, wallet. We'll head out to the first stop, where we'll stop and your guide will share some history, and unique facts, and perhaps a dark secret or two. Your tour will cover about 5 miles in three hours, making stops at all of the major monuments and memorials on the National Mall and around the Tidal Basin. At each stop, you'll hear from your guide before being given a few minutes to explore on your own and snap a photo or two. Don't worry! Your guide will stick close to the bikes, giving you the freedom to wander a bit. Our tour route will end back at our shop, where our staff can help direct you to your next activity.
