Before Stonewall: A queer walking tour of Greenwich Village

Join a journalist on a walking tour of Greenwich Village, visiting the homes and haunts of LGBTQ+ writers who lived, worked or were incarcerated in the decades before the Stonewall riots. • We'll meet up near the site of Eve's Hangout, considered by some to be the first lesbian bar in New York City and whose proprietor holds a special place in queer literary history. As we walk to other historic sites we'll hear more about the nightlife scene of the early 20th century, and how luminaries like Audre Lorde and Lorraine Hansberry navigated queer life. • We'll visit the former site of the Women’s House of Detention, which housed many incarcerated queer people, and I'll share its relevance to early LGBTQ+ life in the Village. • After stops to honor and consider other queer women whose literary works left lasting impressions on both our culture and the literary canon, we'll conclude at Henrietta Hudson, a lesbian bar open since 1991, to talk about present-day LGBTQ+ life in New York and beyond. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the lives of LGBTQ+ people whose work, activism and bravery led to the modern queer rights movement, and I'll send you on your way with a list of further readings if you'd like to continue learning about this fascinating era! The tour has a bathroom break at the halfway mark, and we'll walk about 1.5 miles in total.

Manhattan Skyline Kayak Tour

I believe outdoor activities can build personal resilience and love of nature. This is especially important in cities for urban populations. With this in mind, I founded Resilience Adventures, an organization that offers eco-focused kayak and paddleboard experiences on the beautiful Hudson River with the Manhattan Skyline as backdrop. The Manhattan Skyline Eco-Tour is a beginner-level kayak experience which includes basic instruction first and then a group (or private) kayak tour on the Hudson River. The tour travels along the Hoboken waterfront with stunning views of the Manhattan Skyline. The distance traveled depends on the skill/speed of the group. The duration of the entire experience, including instruction, is 1.5 hours after participant check-in. Note: This tour is also available as a stand-up paddleboarding experience for intermediate-level paddleboarders. Beginner paddleboarders should opt for our Learn to Paddleboard lesson instead.

Join us on this fun and informative LGBTQ History Walking Tour! On this tour around Greenwich Village, we will visit historic sites where revolutions began, riots were sparked, and history was made. We will see common threads within the LGBTQ generations who have lived life in New York City, sharing their stories throughout the tour. On this tour, learn more about individual stories of queer activists, and the major political and social movements that have shaped the LGBTQ community over time. Sites include the historic Stonewall Inn, Christopher Park, the NYC AIDS Memorial, and the LGBT Community Center. Each tour will be approximately 2 hours and will cover about 1.5 miles of Greenwich Village. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. You may need an umbrella or water bottle, depending on the weather.

About Me: Before moving to New York 20 years ago, I roasted my own coffee in the middle of no where America. I've been leading coffee tours for a local group of coffee enthusiasts called Coffee Hunters for the past year. This tour is some of the best of the best spots we've visited. About the Tour: With in emphasis on tasting, we will learn about how to talk about the different ways that coffee tastes. Discover a spectrum of acidity, sweetness, body and aftertaste while learning about the coffee roasters behind the scenes. I'll discuss the three waves of American Coffee and how they've influenced New Yorkers coffee habits. We will visit three shops and "cup" or taste coffee at each. Each will be within a five to ten minute walk of each other. Other things to note This is an ideal walk for those with tired feet from NYC touring. All shops are within a few blocks of each other.

Take a bike tour of Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn Bridge Park and the DUMBO warehouse district. After a quick tour of City Hall area, we roll over the Brooklyn Bridge with stops at the Manhattan and Brooklyn towers, for the perfect photo ops of the gorgeous Wall Street skyline. While there, I'll share historical insights into the twin icons of New York City's East River: the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. We'll continue on to the charming brownstone streets of Brooklyn Heights, where you'll see some of the most historic and luxurious homes dating back to the 19th century. After a stop at the beautiful Promenade, we'll zip through New York City's newest, most innovative and beautiful 85-acre waterfront playground, the Brooklyn Bridge Park (just opened in 2010). There will be stops and photo ops galore in the shabby-chic shipping and warehouse districts of DUMBO, Vinegar Hill and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. You’ll get a peek into the history of Brooklyn’s maritime shipping industry that once thrived on these docks and cobblestone streets. Other things to note Novice bikers are welcome.
