This bead factory in the affluent suburb of Karen was started to provide disadvantaged women with a source of income. It now employs more than 400 women, many of them single mothers. Kazuri means “beautiful” in Swahili, and all the beads are handmade here and turned into colourful necklaces and bracelets. You can take a tour to see how it’s done. If you can’t make it out to Karen, Kazuri has a shop closer to town at the Junction Shopping Mall just off the Ngong Road.

"Kazuri" means small and beautiful in Kiswahili and this quaint little ceramics bazaar has delightful pieces of jewellery, crockery, and accessories (beaded scarves, purses etc), all locally-made right at their on-site ceramics shop. Started in 1975, this Kenyan enterprise provides employment opportunities for disadvantaged members of society and directly benefits the community and economy. I recommend this particular location because it is their factory shop, prices are attractive, and the variety of stock is much broader. Just 4.5km or a 10 minute drive away from us, this is a fantastic place to buy unique souvenirs, gifts, or collector's items, while supporting locals. Open Monday - Saturday, 8.30am - 6.00pm.

If you are looking for some unique souvenirs and gifts for family and friends, the Kazuri Beads Factory is a great place to shop and help out disadvantaged local women at the same time. Kazuri means "small and beautiful" in Swahili, and these shiny, brightly-colored beads surely fit the bill. Join a free factory tour and see how local women, including many single mothers, make the beads and other pottery items from scratch. After the tour, you can purchase some to take with you, knowing you are purchasing from a World Fair Trade Organization member. Prices are relatively reasonable. This is a great tour to combine with a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum, as the factory lies right nearby.
