There is a deep and ancient connection between the city and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, which is probably derived from the singular conditions of its construction. In the early 1100s, a terrible plague epidemic rages in Europe causing death and desolation. The inhabitants of Bergamo then decide to ask for help to the Madonna: if they will protect them from contagion they will dedicate a church as a thank you. And since the Bergamaschi are speaking people, in 1137 following the vote and on the Piazza del Duomo in the High City they build the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Passing the portico of the Palazzo della Ragione you reach Piazza Duomo, the other important square in Bergamo, if Piazza Vecchia has always been the symbol of administrative power, this is the square of religious power. The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important building in the square.
