US Marine Corps War Memorial
The United States Marine Corps War Memorial represents this nation's gratitude to Marines and those who have fought beside them. While the statue depicts one of the most famous incidents of World War II, the memorial is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in the defense of the USA.
The view of Washington DC at night from the Iwo Jima Memorial is amazing. Many times, when you see night photos and post cards from Washington DC, it is from this vantage point.
In the summer months, Tuesday nights are the Marine Corps Sunset Parade usually at 7pm, and I recommend arriving an hour or so early, to stake out a spot to settle and wait for the start. Don't miss it!
Visible from the car on Rt 50 on your way to DC, but stop here to enjoy the monument, open space, and great views of DC.
Located just 7 minutes away, this memorial features a long trail that wraps around the area, as well as a large park with a lot of green space (great for families with children and dogs).
“(2 miles) Watch the changing of the guard before the soldiers known but to God. Reflect at President John and brother Bobby Kennedys’ resting place and ponder what could have been. See the brave who died in battle for the concept of America, especially Private Felix P. Longoria of 3 Rivers, Texas which refused to bury him because he was Mexican-American. During WWII, the first civil rights march ensued, Senator Lyndon B. Johnson intervened to give him a proper hero’s burial at Arlington National Cemetery, and Latinos coalesced to form the National GI Forum. Even though Latinos defend the US in wars more than any other group and are awarded more Medals of Honor, the concept of America has eluded many when they return home. ”
“This free memorial to the victims of the 9-11 attack on the Pentagon is a very special place. The memorial itself is thoughtfully planned with special meaning built in to its design. This is my favorite place in D.C. for reflection and peace and quiet when needed. Recommend visiting at dusk. ”
