The Independent is easily one of the best mid-size venues in the Bay Area, with a great diversity of artists and genres. There’s always something good to see. I once witnessed singer Mac DeMarco do an insane trust fall from the second floor onto a crowd eager to catch him, and then resume crushing the audience with his performance from the stage. Headlining the Indy is a right of passage for local artists to know they’re moving up in the world. The bar can get crowded, so tip a couple bucks on every drink if you want to catch that bartender’s eye faster for the next round.
A small neighborhood music venue that plays host to lots of high profile artists. Catch a show and grab some late-night food after at Nopa next door. The Fillmore & The Chapel are also great local venues to see a concert.
Intimate, no-frills music venue with a full bar and features indie & emerging acts.

My favorite SF music venue hands down. Great selection of musicians and small enough you can actually see the band.
“This bar has a great atmosphere, combining food and drinks with a rotating art installation.”
“The oozy, buttery deep-dish pies are not a carbon copy of some Chicago creation by any stretch. With topping possibilities like artichokes and goat cheese, they’re a distinctly California creation — and a drop-dead delicious one at that. Note: the menu recently welcomed some healthy seeming things like a roasted kale appetizer and a broccolini topped deep dish pie, but don’t miss the classic — with sausage, mushrooms, and green bell pepper — and the spicy chicken wings. ”
“Trendy coffee shop. Joint venture of the best coffee (Four Barrel Coffee) and the best bread (Josie Baker Bread)”
“Great small menu, great sidewalk seating & Ritual coffee (and bike repair in rear)”
“ The local dive bar. Lots of whiskey, 22 beers on tap, carpet on the floor, and layer upon layer of SF history. It’s also cash only, which freaks patrons out in this day and age. The website’s response to its currency-forward state is: "Berating us about this only makes us stronger." ”
