I occasionally go here at night, sit on the steps, and just observe the reflection pool along with the Washington Monument in the night sky. I honestly think the experience is better at night. There’s usually college aged adults and small groups of tourists around even at 1am.

I love walking around the back of the Lincoln Memorial where you can get away from large groups and take photos
A must visit for your first time in DC. Start at the Lincoln memorial, then head toward the WWII memorial, followed by an up close look at the Washington National Monument. The national mall is BIG so prepare to walk a lot, or else hail a pedi-cab or uber/lyft
