Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 431 Richland Balsam, a mountain near Waynesville, North Carolina, rises to 6,410 feet and is the highest peak on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Visitors can reach the summit on a 1.5 mile, self-guided loop trail that passes through a spruce-fir forest. The term “balsam” is commonly applied to Fraser fir and red spruce, the scent of which permeates the fresh air on the mountain. Two varieties of spruce grow at Richland Balsam: “he-balsam” has rough bark and prickly needles like a man’s beard and “she-balsam” has smooth barked fir with shiny flat needles. Other plants such as blackberry and elderberry grow where the firs have been knocked over by windstorms, opening the forest floor to sunlight. We recommend stopping at this overlook for a picture in front of both the incredible view and the large sign located here signifying the relevance of this spot.

A trip to WNC is not complete without a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP). The great thing about the location of Lakeside Lodge is the access to some seriously beautiful drives. It is close to NC Highway 64 which is a classic scenic drive through WNC, the BRP, and scenic Highway 215. From Lakeside Lodge, you can get to the BRP in about 35 minutes with much of that drive being along scenic Hwy 215. Once you are on the BRP you can head South for about 10 minutes to the Richland Balsam Overlook, the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway! If you head North you can access Devils Courthouse (see my guide to that hike) and continue on towards Black Balsam Mountain/Shining Rock Wilderness Area and Graveyard fields.

Be sure to stop at the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway! And there's a great highland hike that offers a cool hiking option on hot summer days. There are two overlooks for Richland Balsam, near Milepost 431 (about 45 miles from downtown Asheville). Driving south on the Blue Ridge Parkway, you will reach the parking area on the right first, signed "Haywood-Jackson Overlook." This is where you park for the 1.5-mile loop hike to the top of Richland Balsam. Continue south on the Parkway about 1/3 mile to the overlook on the left with the large sign proclaiming "Highest Elevation" on the Parkway (6,053 feet).
