Begijnhof is a women’s religious community dating back to the 14th century. The women of the Catholic sisterhood (Beguine) had lived in this secluded and quiet community that consists of housing, church and courtyard. When the Catholicism was banned from 1578 to 1795, the begijnhof was protected for these women to practice their religion because it was a private property. When you walk into the Begijnhof, you will see the Houten Huys (timber house) built in 1528 to your right. It is one of only two remaining timber houses in Amsterdam and isthe oldest wooden house in Amsterdam. Opening hours: - daily from 9:00 to 17:00. You can also visit the chapel during these opening hours.

The Begijnhof is one of Amsterdam's best known hofjes (almshouses). It consists of a group of houses built around a secluded courtyard and garden which provided modest homes for the Beguines - a group of unmarried religious women who lived together in a close community under vows of chastity.

A small place where women used tom live in the 16th century. After becoming a widow, women moved here to be protected by the community. Off course a quirky little church is included in the grounds.
