20 miles north of Puerto Penasco, this well laid out dirt-road tour (4-wheel drive is not required) takes you to the edge of 9 volcanic moon-like craters in the Sonoran Desert including lava tubes, black pumice soil, and the Gran Altar sand dunes. Touted as the desert with the greatest biodiversity in the world with 40 species of mammals (including the endangered Sonoran pronghorn and long horn sheep), 200 of birds, 20 of reptiles/amphibians (including the endangered Gila monster and desert turtle) and two species of native freshwater fish. The 714,566 hectare site comprises two distinct parts: the dormant volcanic Pinacate Shield of black and red lava flows and desert pavements to the east, and, in the west, the Gran Altar Desert with its ever changing and varied sand dunes that can reach a height of 200 metres.

Best with an SUV or 4 wheel drive but can be done in car. The amazing protected areas and one of the world heritage sites of Mexico!
