“Built from an old craftsman style bungalow, the bar known as 1886 lives in the Raymond Restaurant. Both places are fantastic, but 1886 provides an incredible ambiance and custom drinks. Try to sit outside next to their outdoor fireplace should you be able to find a spot. ”

“It's small and French, so the coffee is terrific and the pastries divine. They also do dinner Thursday through Saturday nights, although I haven't tried it. They offer traditional French bistro fare without the snootiness.”

“A Big Hike! If all of the trails above seem too tame, there's always the hike from Sierra Madre's Chantry Flat to Mt. Wilson, which is a punishing but beautiful trail about 7 miles up with a 4,200-foot gain in elevation. Lots of people do this hike as conditioning, to work up to bigger peaks. The 5,710 foot summit is home for an observatory responsible for the most detailed photos of Mars. While the summit is steeped in astronomical wonder and tremendous views of Los Angeles, the trails are the real beauty of this hike. Gear: Good hiking boots, Trekking poles, Daypack with 3L of water (you can refill at the summit), Sunscreen, Extra Layers, Insect repellant (the bugs can be bad at points),”
