Serves good, simple Romanian food (the mici are excellent, as is the enormous lamb shank - enough for two people) and a more than decent pint. A must.

Calea Victoriei was Bucharest's showpiece street in the Interwar years. Tudor Octavian wrote, "this is how the whole of Bucharest would look if we had been allowed…, if its builders had been clever enough…". After roughly half a century of decline, it has recently been returning to this role.

Parks & Nature

The Cișmigiu Gardens or Cișmigiu Park (Romanian: Grădinile Cișmigiu or Parcul Cișmigiu) are a public park near the center of Bucharest, Romania, spanning areas on all sides of an artificial lake. The gardens' creation was an important moment in the history of Bucharest. They form the oldest and, at 16 hectares, the largest park in city's central area. The main entrance is from Regina Elisabeta Boulevard, in front of the City Hall; there is another major entrance at the Știrbei Vodă Street, near the Crețulescu Palace.

Drinks & Nightlife

Still tops our list of 'clubs for people who do not like clubs.' It is a brilliant place where there is always something going on, be it a DJ or live music supplied by one of Bucharest's better live acts. It also attracts a decent line up of international acts too: often quirky bands you actually want to go and see. The crowd is equally eclectic, refreshingly free of the airs and graces you find in so many other Bucharest clubs. We love it, and note that it opens early: it is now a pub as much as a club, and when the weather is good enough it has a very smart and most popular terrace. Food upstairs at Alt Shift. Fantastic.

Nice little wine bar tucked away on an Old Town side street which quickly won itself a loyal following of admirers and regulars. A look at the wine list will be enough to tell you why, offering as it does a vast range of wines from across the world, and many of them are available by the glass. There are some good nibbles too if you get hungry. The idea behind this place was to create a wine bar where anyone - no matter how little they know about wine - would feel welcome, comfortable and not be intimidated. In that regard, it's a total success.
