Food Scene

In the village, a three minute stroll away. Hearty breakfasts a speciality, and some good, honest staples. A favourite for weekend brunch, both for convenience and price. They've started opening on some weekend evenings (check in the window) and you could do a lot worse for something filling and cheerful. I don't think they are licensed, but worth asking about BYOB.

In nearby Lochgilphead, a good choice for lunch. They do excellent soups and salads, home baked cakes, and an interesting selection of local beers.

Probably the best restaurant in the area, and certainly my favourite. Kilberry is a tiny hamlet, on the slow road from Ardrishaig to Tarbet. It's maybe a forty minute drive to restaurant, longer if you stop to take in the fantastic views out across to Islay and Jura. The cooking is superb - there's a reason it retains a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and quite often you'll find that everything on the menu comes from within 20 miles of the restaurant. Sea food is landed nearby, vegetables come from the local farm, and if lamb is on the menu, it will be the finest you've tasted. David also keeps a great range of local malt whiskies, and a very good wine cellar.

To my shame, The Starfish Restaurant has been open 8 years, and this year is the first time I've visited. It was well worth it, though. A lovely room, very tastefully furnished, and the food is absolutely wonderful. They specialise in seafood, and there's an enormous list of fresh choices on the blackboard over the bar. I can recommend everything, but the seafood stroganoff I had was very special.

Drinks & Nightlife

Of the three bars in Ardrishaig, I prefer the Argyll Arms, for its comfortable lounge. A nice place to dry out in, with a coal fire, and also the place to watch rugby or football.

Parks & Nature

Kilmartin Glen is home to some of the most ancient sites in Scotland. Places not to miss are the stone circle at Temple Wood, the linear cemetery made up of cairns stretching the length of the valley, and the standing stones, some over 10 feet in height. Slightly further afield, you'll find cup and ring marked stones scattered around, a medieval castle, and a ruined mansion house.

Arts & Culture

Before tramping down Kilmartin Glen, spend an hour or so in the small local museum. And AFTER your walk, return for the soup and scones at the museum cafe. Locals tip: if you go to the back of the cafe, there are stairs down to a lovely conservatory, with views down into the glen.

Entertainment & Activities

There's a great wee 9 hole golf course up behind Tarbert, on the loch shores. Two straightforward par 4s on the flat (watch out for the burn) three holes built along a hill across the road, and a trio in a scenic section at the back which are as lovely as any holes I've ever played. Honesty box is in the starters hut at the first tee.

Excellent, compact 9-holer. Can get busy at weekends, empty mid-week. Originally built for staff and patients at the old hospital, it's built around a quarry and an old firing range. Honesty box in the club-house if there's no one around.

Macrahanish is a championship links course, which would have hosted plenty of tournaments if it was easier to get to. First hole, that requires you to carry the Atlantic Ocean, keeps popping up in "Best 18s" - and it's a beauty. Watch out for the starter "kindly" waving you out to the Tiger Tee - it's so far out on the rocks that they should lay on a rowing boat to get there. Don't worry, the beach is in play, the biggest bunker I've ever seen.

An 18 hole course on the beach, with springy turf that makes it a joy to play, and views out to Ireland, which seems close enough to reach with a good drive.

A cracking wee nine-holer, with great views. On a windy day be careful, or your ball could end up in the Hebrides.
