In the 1280s, Magnus Ladulås built a defense castle around the castle, which became the castle's tower. Kalmar Art Museum is right next to the castle peninsula and the city park, it’s a private regional art museum in Kalmar, with Kalmar Art Association as the main man. The museum was founded in 1942, and in 2008 an additional museum building was built in the Park.
