Caerhays Castle is an English Heritage Grade 1 Listed Building and currently home to the Williams family. The Castle is opened for a short spell in the Spring.
Firstly it is a home. The contents show the ceaseless accumulations of its residents over the past 140 years. The geography of the house makes it impossible to give unlimited tours to large numbers of people at any one time so the size of each party is restricted to 12/15 people.
There are collections on display and the displays alter year by year but include Victorian Jugs, the crockery used for running the House (19th Century Houses were very labour intensive), the Bric-a-Brac of an Edwardian Billiard Room and much more.
Any house, large or small, depends upon the constant vigilance of its owner and you will see the results of the unremitting hard work of the staff in keeping everything clean, keeping wind and water out of the House and keeping at bay the ever present danger of destructive rot and termites. Over the years the House has been blessed by a long line of selfless and hard working people. It is hoped that their hard work will give pleasure to visitors as they wander around.

Explore its Creeks & Backwaters on the high tide – or on the low tide venture down to view it's Wildlife and historic Waterfronts. On both trips you will be paddling through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Marine Conservation Area teeming with wildlife that includes kingfishers, herons, egrets, cormorants, various waders and if you’re lucky a seal or dolphin.

The town was founded by the Normans for the export of tin about 800 years ago. At that time, the river was wide and deep and ships tied up along the quay to load tin destined for many European ports. The town became the second busiest port on the south coast of England.
By the 13th century Lostwithiel had become the county capital. It was the administration centre for county affairs and Cornwall's main stannary town. Ironically, tin, which was the original source of the wealth of the town, eventually caused its decline. Rubble, from the mines on the moors, silted up the river, restricting the size of vessels that could use the quay.
Today there are numerous antique shops selling furniture, collectibles, ceramics and such things. Other shops, hidden in the old streets, specialise in arts and crafts, paintings, lace and patchwork. The museum is in the former Corn Exchange and has an interesting collection reflecting life in Lostwithiel over the past centuries. The local library is in a restored mediaeval house. It has an excellent selection of books on Cornwall and there are often exhibitions in the upstairs gallery.
Lostwithiel Farmers Market is held on the 4th Saturday of the month in the scout hut which is located in the free car park.
The market will be open from 10am until 1pm with a wide variety of stalls such as fresh fish, meat, vegetables, home baking, ales and apple juices with refreshments available.

The Aquarium is situated on the historic Fowey Town Quay and gives a fascinating glimpse into the marine life found around the Cornish coast. Although the aquarium is small in size, our visitors are constantly amazed by the variety of marine creatures on display.
In addition to a wide range of fish from the tiny gobies and shannies from the shallows up to Conger eels which inhabit deep wrecks, there are various types of crabs and lobsters lurking in the corners!
Children will especially enjoy the touch pool where they can pick up a shore crab or have their fingers tickled by prawns.
First established in 1952 the aquarium still retains many of the original tanks. Fresh sea water is pumped in daily at high tide and the filtration is minimal. This is a mixed blessing as keeping the clarity of the water acceptable is difficult at times but on the plus side are the various creatures such as sea-squirts, sponges and tube worms that arrive as plankton in the water and grow on in the aquarium.
The majority of fish are obtained locally from local fishermen and anglers.
We try to use local sources for the fish food, we are fortunate to have Ammodytes Ltd close by at St. Ives. In addition to being renowned for the quality of their fishing baits they are also a major supplier of frozen foods to the aquarium world.
