Not fancy, phenomenal soul food - Chef Oji - featured on Diners Drive ins and Dives a few years ago - cash only, not cheap (but really good serving sizes), but great food only 1 block away on U St near 10th. My favorites - Beef Ribs (ask for the original ones), Shrimp & Grits, Catfish, Mac & Cheese & Sweet Potatoes - and the Meatloaf, too.

Reasonably priced food - a place many will go, and work on laptop for hours in couches, chairs. Also normal tables for dining. Bar and Bookstore (African American centric in selection of many of it's books/materials).

Famous, Iconic known for their Half-smoke. People love Ben's - famous for Obama stopping in unannounced in late 2008 - fair amount of soul food. I'm not that much of a fan of their food, except their best kept secret is their breakfast - inexpensive (or last time I was there) and really good basic breakfast food - but only until 10 45am. 1 minute after, and the grill is turned over for lunch! Great jukebox w/ great old school R&B, soul music selections.
