Locks allow boats to move from the inland lakes (Union and Washington) to Puget Sound. Especially nice during the summer; watch the commercial fishing boats and pleasure craft come and go. You can walk on the lock walls when closed and get close up. During certain periods salmon run through the fish ladder (lots of fun).

From waterfront in downtown Seattle, you can walk onto the Bainbridge Island or Bremerton Ferry boats. On nice days the views of Seattle, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker and the Olympic mountains are breathtaking! Inexpensive. Can do round trip in 2-3 hours depending on which route you take. NOTE: can be windy and quite cool on the water even on summer days.

Original 1890s farm town has lots of victorian homes (north of downtown) and a really nice old downtown with lots of antique shops and restaurants. Near the confluence of the Snoqualmie and Skykomish rivers, vast river bottom is covered with farms and on nice days south of town the views east to the cascades are excellent. Drive east: 100 miles east down Highway 2 (over 4000 ft. Stevens Pass) is Leavenworth WA. This small town is modeled after a Bavarian village and is up in the snow zone during the winter, and is fun during the holidays. Popular place all seasons.

Shopping

Iconic original farmer's market still maintains a lot of its traditional feel. Very popular. Lots of restaurants. Original site of Starbucks Coffee. Directly under the Public Market sign, there is a fish-monger. If you want to get a really good laugh, watch the guys throw salmon to tourists. Seriously hilarious. If you participate, expect to smell like fish! The hotel visible to the left and behind the market was well known as a house where, uh, "services" were provided to the sailors who visited the port. The Seattle aquarium is below the Market (down a steep hill) on Alaskan Way, and is very nice. Near the Ferris wheel.

Drinks & Nightlife

Corner of NE 85th Street and Lake Washington Blvd NE, downtown Kirkland has lots of nice restaurants and bars, and has a nice park directly on Lake Washington. Very nice, upscale but not unreasonable. If you go south on Lake Washington Blvd, there is a famous local burger joint called Kid Valley. Across the street is a fantastic lake-side park with fantastic views into Seattle, and a great place to swim / wade during the summer. Very nice. Carillon Point: Half a mile further south is a nice hotel/restaurant/marina/office development. Ample parking. Great views. Was built on the site of a ship-building company in the original town of Houghton. Costco started in Kirkland!

Queen Anne Hill is just north of the Space Needle. Queen Anne Avenue is a very steep hill that runs from "lower Queen Anne" up to the restaurant/commercial area on top. Original QA avenue is also known as the Counter Balance. Original street cars were pulled up the hill by weights that slid in tunnels under the street. Kerry Park. 3 Blocks west of QA Avenue @ Highland Drive. The views of the city are amazing and overlooks Elliott bay. Mansions galore. Walk 5 blocks west on Highland from Kerry park for views over Puget sound. On SE corner of Highland and QA Avenue is a mansion designed in French Gothic style and was the Japanese Embassy at one time. Converted to condos.

200' waterfall on the Snoqualmie river. During spring/or winter floods bring your rain coat! Spray shoots hundreds of feet into the air. Owned by Puget Sound Energy, a weir dam backs water up above the falls to feed penstocks and a fully operational 1890s hydro plant with original Westinghouse generators. Originally built to supply power for street cars in Seattle, it still supplies power. Nearby town of Snoqualmie is classic 1890s WA town with a cute downtown with restaurants, old trains and a nice place to stop for a bite to eat. Drive 30 miles east on I-90 to Snoqualmie Pass puts you in the heart of the Cascade mountains. See Roslyn and Cle Elum further east.

14,400 foot Mt. Rainier is covered with Glaciers all year and has 4 distinct climate zones. It is one of the tallest mountains in the lower 48. Paradise lodge was build during the 1930s depression as a public works project. The mountain is enormous and breathtaking. During late spring and summer there is hiking. Early spring it is not uncommon for snow banks well over 10' high. Closed in winter. Check guide books for details.

Arts & Culture

Located on the Swinomish Slough (saltwater / tidal river) this classic 1890s town is uniquely situated across the water from Fidalgo Island (accessible via the very obvious orange bridge south of town). Nice shops, galleries, places to eat. Nasty Jack's antiques. Small - won't drive your husband crazy). In Skagit river delta, spectacular views of Mt. Baker and Cascades. Close by and well worth the drive: Deception Pass State Park (bridge between Whidbey Island/Fidalgo Island). Mt. Erie is a huge rock on Fidalgo. Views to the south are incredible. (Keep an eye on kids if close to the edge.). Anacortes on north end of island has ferry to San Juan Islands.
