Delicious Xiao Long Bao. Go early as there is usually a line. There is a very short menu only in Chinese. I would recommend original XLB and XLB with crab

Lotus Eatery serves food from the southern province of Yunnan. Food from this area tends to be slightly spicy and there are some amazing cold dishes like the spicy chicken salad and mint salad. Mashed potato is also good.

If you are missing western food and feeling fancy, Commune Social by Jason Atherton serves modern Spanish tapas. The restaurant does not take any bookings so you just show up. It is usually busy so you may need to wait at the bar. Would not suggest going with a group larger than four. Top notch food and good value for the quality. Around 300 CNY per person.

Beautiful Chinese garden - although touristy and often crowded, this is where you can find the best Tang Bao (soup dumpling) in town

This is a good choice if you don't want to line up and pay to visit one of the observation towers in Pudong (oriental pearl tower, shanghai tower, etc). This is just two floors below the observation deck in the bottle opener building - you may order a drink in the hotel bar or lobby and enjoy the view without people pushing and shoving around you (and the drinks are same price as what you'd pay in most bars around Shanghai)

Arts & Culture

This is a tiny apartment in a residential compound housing a private collection of propaganda posters from the cultural revolution. 100% recommend and it is just a short walk from the apartment! When you reach the compound, as the guards, they will give you a small map to find the museum :)

West Bund is my favourite area of Shanghai. It is along the quieter, south western bank of the Huangpu River and has a number of art museums as well as a boulder climbing wall, dedicated running and cycling tracks and a skate park. The Long Museum in particular is an interesting building designed by Aterlier Deshaus on the site of a former coal factory. They usually host prominent international artists in a few major shows each year. The current exhibition is "Still Moving" sculptor Antony Gormley. Following your visit to the museum you can wander around the area or cycle along the river.

Modern art exhibitions in a former power station. Usually showing interesting installations plus architect's retrospectives. You can actually cycle here from Long Museum if you follow the "Huangpu Riverside Cycling Route"

Art musuem closer to the more touristy part of Puxi riverside. The nearby Suzhou Creek is also very nice to cycle along. If you're into gritty tragic love stories and Chinese films I recommend the film Suzhou River

Parks & Nature

Shanghai isn't known for having lovely pockets of nature but what you WILL find here and in other parks around China, are the elderly people dancing, practising calligraphy, playing cards and generally being merry.
