Food scene

Westport is a busy little town, well geared up for tourism without losing any of it's traditional Irish charm. Book trips and tours (especially one of the guided food tours run by Westport Walking Tours), visit its many restaurants and old-fashioned pubs and soak up its history.

Beaches

Beaches do not come more remote and unspoilt than Silver Strand approx 25km on from Louisburgh. It has a glorious Atlantic views out towards Inishturk, Inishbofin and Clare Island and fine views on a typical landscape behind. Although off the beaten track it is popular with families and swimmers due to the shelter provided by the ecologically important sand dunes, but there is no lifeguard and the tide comes in across the expanse of silver sand very quickly.

This popular family beach benefits from the shelter of Clew Bay and is an ideal spot to try your hand at kayaking or paddleboarding (equipment and tuition available at the beach). Its stone pier offers good opportunities for angling and pier jumping at high tide, and mackerel fishing trips depart from here. There is also a fine walk along the headland.

Another Blue Flag beach popular for kite surfing, wind surfing and birdwatching. It is also a site of environmental and geological importance as it contains the best examples of drumlins (low hills formed by glacial movements and submerged by melting ice caps thousands of years ago).

This sandy beach stretches 1/2 mile from Carrowmore quay to the Bunowen River and as well as being a beautiful sandy beach, it is one of Ireland's most unique wildlife habitats as it is backed by low machair grasslands and dunes that are home to many plants, birds and insects.

Sightseeing

There's a lot written about Ireland's holy mountain, and even if you are not a pilgrim it is worth the 2 hr climb for the view from the top on a clear day - it is said that there are 365 islands and inlets in Clew Bay and the view out over them is breathtaking. Do not underestimate how difficult the final ascent (and descent is) as the last 200m or so are slippery shale. Wear sensible boots and take a stout stick!

The Great Famine of 1845-9 had a cataclysmic impact on this part of rural Ireland. This memorial graphically illustrates the countless lives that were lost as the starving population was loaded onto "coffin ships" bound for the New World, and perished en route. The ruins of Murrisk provide a spectacular setting for the epic sunsets found in this part of the world

This beautifully maintained 42km cycle trail goes from Westport to Newport to Mulranny and Achill following the old railway line. Cycle hire is available and you can opt to just do a section, or even a one -way trip. Electric bikes are also available to hire. The scenery is truly spectacular as you travel through Mayo's mountains, bogs, farmland and along the Atlantic coast.
