312 North Raymond RoadLibby Hill Forest consists of over eleven miles of multipurpose recreational trails in Gray, Maine. The trail system spans properties owned by the Town of Gray, SAD 15, Royal River Conservation Trust (RRCT) and the Gray Community Endowment (GCE). These trails are located adjacent to the Gray-New Gloucester Middle and High Schools.
The history of the project has spanned over 20 years and was made possible by the demanding work of hundreds of volunteers. The trails officially opened in February of 2001. In 2008 the Land for Maine’s Future program awarded funding to save a critical parcel adjoining the school property.
These trails span four properties owned by the Town of Gray, SAD 15, Royal River Conservation Trust (RRCT) and the Gray Community Endowment. They are overseen by the Gray Parks and Recreation and Facility Departments and the Gray Community Endowment.
Libby Hill
Libby Hill Forest consists of over eleven miles of multipurpose recreational trails in Gray, Maine. Located in Raymond, this 1,072-acre property consists of mixed forest land and significant wetland habitat, representing one of the largest pieces of open-space in this region of southern Maine. The varied landscape includes ridges and hardwood slopes with scenic views of the surrounding landscape. There are a few stands of black birch, an uncommon tree species in Maine, and mature, white pine trees up to three feet in diameter.
Morgan Meadow itself is an extensive wetland area with significant potential for improved waterfowl habitat. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has considered restoring the dam on Morgan Meadow to improve the productivity of the wetland for a number of waterfowl species, including black ducks, wood ducks, mallards, non-game water-dependent birds, and mammals. Moose Meadow is another small wetland area at the northern end of the property.
Duck hunting and deer hunting are popular activities on this land providing the Department with an unusual opportunity for management of the wildlife resources as well as fostering public use of this recreational property located within the Sebago Lake watershed and within 20 miles of Portland.
