Food Scene

Welcome to The Pantry in Yattendon For some time we have been looking to establish a destination village café where we have the opportunity to serve some of our favourite foods complimented by quality coffee, teas and delicious fruit juices. As well as offering freshly prepared delicious exciting menus, wonderful breads, pastries, cakes and light bite menus, we have kept a few of the greasy spoon classics like 'The Full English' and bacon sandwiches but updated them with artisan bread and free range bacon. Our coffee will be worlds apart from that of the chains. We won’t do ‘Grande’ and drown your coffee in boiled milk, instead we employ baristas we know can make consistently good coffee and our range of teas and hot chocolates are exciting and new to the area.

Shaw House was completed in 1581 by Thomas Dolman, a member of a successful family who had made their fortune from the cloth industry in Newbury. This impressive manor has witnessed centuries of political and social tension and evidence exists for its contribution to some of the most notable events in English history. The striking nature of its architecture established the Dolmans' position as pre-eminent in Newbury and the surrounding area. The Dolman family have been significant to the development of Shaw House; in all it was passed down through six generations between 1554 and 1728. During this time visitors to Shaw included several kings and queens on their royal progresses around the country as well as courtiers travelling from London to Bath. It then became the setting for part of the Second Battle of Newbury in 1644, acting as headquarters for Charles I, while hand-to-hand battle was fought in the gardens between his army and that of the Parliamentarians. Over the succeeding centuries Shaw House has been the country retreat of a Duke, the residence of an 18th century investor who had interests in the West Indian sugar plantations, and the home of a large Victorian family. At the outbreak of World War II the house was requisitioned by the War Office as accommodation for troops. Following the bombing of Newbury Senior Council schools in 1943 it took on its final role as a school for many generations of Newbury children. Having stood empty for over a decade a major restoration programme has rescued it from near dereliction and left it refurbished for the benefit of the community.

Grimsbury Castle is an Iron Age hillfort, built to overlook the Kennet and Pang valleys, although now it is almost entirely covered with trees and its strategic position is difficult to appreciate. However the impressive earthworks can be seen from permissive paths within the woods. Hillforts are the largest type of prehistoric monument, and Grimsbury is a Scheduled Monument in recognition of its national importance. A trench excavated across the ramparts in 1957 showed how the ditches were originally much deeper but have filled in with time. Flint tools, ‘pot-boilers’ (stones heated in a fire and then used to heat water), sling pebbles, a quern for grinding grain and a small amount of Early Iron Age pottery were found. A further trench at the West Gate showed that at some point the Iron Age tribe had redesigned and strengthened the defences and had used large flint blocks to build a wall narrowing the entrance. We do not know if there were any buildings inside the fort.
