Croagh Patrick a holy mountain is close by. You can climb it but be prepared for all weathers in one day!! The views are amazing even if you just get to the statue. Good footwear is essential , bring water, a decent snack and waterproofs. Take it easy. Some people climb in their bare feet in the memory of St. Patrick, who spent forty days and forty nights fasting on the summit more than 1,500 years ago. A small church at the summit of the mountain welcomes all, while magnificent views of Clew Bay, with an island for every day of the year can be seen!

Doolough is 15 minutes away and it is breathtaking! Doolough Valley Famine Walk takes place annually. The famine walk commemorates a tragedy that occurred during the height of the terrible Famine Years 1845-1849 in Ireland. In early spring of 1847, almost 400 starving adults and children walked 10 miles from Louisburgh to Doolough in search of a Board of Guardians who were to meet in Delphi Lodge. They had been given this direction from the Relieving officer in Louisburgh as they sought food or a ticket to the workhouse. The weather was terrible with wind and hail beating down upon them. When they arrived in Delphi the Guardians refused them food or their tickets to the workhouse. Needless to say many of them perished on the return journey as fatigue and exhaustion from hunger took hold. Some of those that had energy to start the journey back to Louisburgh were swept into the lake by the heavy squalls. It is a great spot come wind, rain, hail, snow etc. One of my favourite places.

You can take a ferry from Roonagh pier to Clare Island or InisTurk. You can find out prices and Ferry times at: clareislandferry. They times vary during the year but the service is very frequent over the summer months The Ferry takes 10 minutes to reach Clare Island. There are activities held throughout the year on the island. Great walks of the island and a brilliant vantage spot to look back at the mainland and over to Achill and the neighbouring Inish turk.

There is a National Famine Monument located in Murrisk. This magnificent piece of sculpture by John Behan was unveiled by President Mary Robinson in 1997. It depicts a Coffin Ship with skeleton bodies and commemorates the anniversary of the Famine. There is a lovely tidal walk you can do here which will bring you down to Murrisk Abbey.
