How to escape from an eventual Lisbon's Heat Wave.

How to escape from an eventual Lisbon's Heat Wave.

Heatwave advice

Sometimes during the Summer months the thermometer can climb above and further than 30 degrees, so precautions for not being too much affected (as you surely aren't used to bearing 3 or 4 heat waves per year as we are nowadays). This is a small empiric Guide to help you mitigate the impact of such harsh heather (*1). INTRODUCTION: Lisbon is actually the South/Eastern side of a Peninsula (da Estremadura), so around the capital there’s a mix of land, Sea and River, this fact creates a unique micro-climate (incredible mild winters, lower rain than nacional average and a smaller amplitude between lowest and highest temperatures than in depth Portugal (& also Interior Spain as the great southern peninsula plain stretches to the Tejo). The dominant wind is a North/Northwest wind that comes from the Ocean (so the fresh or cold nights depending on the season), in winter it gets 15, April some 25 and from mid June until September 30 is frequently crossed. On 10/20% of the time the wind blows from the South, many times directly coming from the Sahara, and on those days, it crosses 35 degrees being hot all day. The dominant weather system in front of the Peninsula is the Azores Anticyclone, that during Summer wanders above these Archipelago up to the British Isles, so it refers moist from the gulf stream to reach our lower latitudes and that’s why we have a very dry summer season (and British Isles a wet one). Lisbon has some 250 Sunny (or almost), 50 Cloudy and 50 Rainy days, maybe 15/30 of stormy or critically hot and it never snows here. This is a 10 suggestions Guide of activities, advices and Beach suggestions to provide you with a good range of activities might be developed during those hottest days. CONCLUSION: So the main idea presented in this Guide is for you to plan to mitigate the eventual heathwave during your holidays to be able to keep them dynamic and interesting. This advice is also good to follow on milder temperatures, as the activities can be done not just because it is really hot during the day. Don’t forget Lisbon Nights are usually fresh regardless of burning when the sun shows itself, so a pullover or similar light warm wear is advisable for recovering and pleasant night walkabouts. Take notice that the general stock of modern buildings (Shopping centres) have good acclimatisation, but our houses are neither built for the cold of the winter nor for the heat of the summer, so some houses exposed to the sun are notably hot. Also some public buses aren’t provided air conditioned so during rush hour or  on busy tracks it can be an uncomfortable experience to use these public transports. Be aware that out of the danger hours there’s lots of good moments and nice temperatures to benefit from, such as the freshness of early mornings, acceptable temperatures until mid morning and the breezy end of the day with a very pleasant sunshine, beside nights who are almost never cold (just fresh), so the secret is to use this time of the day and do a stop during midday to rest, sleep or beach swim to cool things down a bit. Enjoy Lisbon summer, always sunny, sometimes really hot! William Falcao, Lx Townhouse, Sao Cristovao.  * 1 - Be aware I don’t provide here professional Health Advice, just experience, though and common sense, please research further the plentifull literature about this theme for more accurate informations.
1 Small tips/Advice from Portuguese heat mitigation habits: a - Walk in the Shadow if possible. b - Use a hat, at least carry a small one with you. Use beach umbrellas on the danger hours (11am to) 4pm. c - Use Shorts, forget socks and have light footwear to go barefoot easily. D - Always have water (Can be filtered on the spot), ask tap water with Cafe). E - Use a suntan protector and monitor sunburns on the first days (double watch the kids). F - Don't eat too much during the danger hours, revenge on Ice-cream S0S, have dinner late but don't eat much and do our early evening light meal (replicate the breakfast usually bread with now cold milk or fresh juice). G- If needed do not hesitate to request help from our SNS (Sistema Nacional de Saude, Health National System) or even drop-by the nearest Pharmacy to ask for advice. It’s expectable if you can not cope with a busier day and the exhaustion of the heath takes a toll on you.

2 Do City visit as early as possible and during the end of the day: Try to wake early, plan to use the earlybird day hours for some activity and specially plan to do something defensive towards the heat during the most affected part of the day. Be aware that if it’s 35 at 1pm, can be 28 at 9am. Hot nights are not frequent but can also happen during heat waves (some 28 max at night) and the day heats quite fast. Also to take advantage of the end of the day, as it’s usually breezy (Peninsula sistem os daily winds from the centre to its shores) is also a good action even if that incurs in having dinner the Iberian way (allways after 9pm during summer or beach stays).

3 Escape for the Hilltops.  Fortunately Lisbon has some Hillchains around itself, all aren’t too tall, but surely fresher places than in Lisbon, perhaps with less 10 than in the capital.  So to see Palácios da Pena or Regaleira or Monserrate on the Serra de Sintra is a safe bet to escape during the hottest hours with a nearby beach swim easily accessible for a second local activity.  You can also cross the River and go to Arrabida Hill Chains, but here beside wandering on places as Azeitao or Sesimbra, you’ll have plenty of beaches and some cliff edge parks to spend those terribly hot hours (Although not as fresh as Sintra). North of Lisbon there’s also some nice similar places, so with a Car (AC is compulsory for these days), pop here and there for a busy diverse day, visiting a monument, national park, leisure equipment or even a farm on Lisbon's northern boundary region called Regiao Saloia.  Always have an eye on fluvial beaches as they’re also pleasant interior’s escape places, as also are Municipal Lidos/Swimmingpools for the general metropolitan populations *2. It's a sign of friendship if you’re invited to take a swim on a private House’s Swimmingpool and out and around Lisbon there’s lots of them.

Visit some cold heavy stone Monuments.  Many Portuguese mediaeval and from the time of the discoveries were built taking in consideration summer acclimatisation and are usually fresh places with adjacent gardens, a good place to visit after a lunch, dare to lie down on the grass and fall asleep for a bit. Palácios da Ajuda (West), Marqueses Fronteira (N) and Clothes Museum (Paco do Lumiar (centre-west) are heritage buildings as the Jeronimos complex in Belem. Queluz Palace (Sec. XVIII) and Mafra Monastery are (nearby)  Sinatra's bonus or extra attractions that top-up a visit to our adult’s disneyland, both architecture gems of exorbitant building fashion * 3. * 3 - Researching this Guide Wikipedia says there’s 62 Palaces around Lisbon. I wonder that a similar amount was already destroyed or lost (1755 Earthquake, dictatorship, etc), would be great to have more open to your visit interest. Mafra Convent was built with an enormous amount of Gold that came from Brasil during the XVIII Century, instead of kick-starting an industrial revolution of similar development. Queluz Palace is a Gem, the Last Queen Carlota Joaquina who lived here was a bit mad and many stories are told about her (The king’s Family runned-away to Brasil from Napoleon troops and only returned 15 Years after only after a court’s assembly ultimatum. Grand gardens and exquisite Baroque and also neoclassic, a Portuguese Kings vanity Versailles copy-cap exercise. Many Palaces are still Government premises or Army and the Catholic Trust called Santa Casa da Misericordia ownership.

4 - Choose urban Swim or Picnic park soiree. a - Choose to book a Swimmingpool day.  Lisbon has some good public Swimmingpools (quite cheap too, less than 5 euros) and also some leisure clubs that can be booked for a lazy hot day, with many chances of indoor activities (Pool, Table tennis or football, cards and arrows, or even a dark-room wide-plane film exhibition). Also nearby Lisbon there’s some country clubs (Belas, Marinha, Penha Longa) that provide 5* (Usually along Golf) private condominium spirit offer. b - Organise a healthy cool and calm Picnic (Piquenique) in a Park with an activity. So escape inside Lisbon to one of the nice parks you have, fortunately Portugueses don’t flock to parks (When it's hot, going to the beach or dam is the usual plan) so space is assured, also some level of privacy and some fresh shadowy environment is always reachable. The park’s options would suggest inner Lisbon Parque Eduardo VII close to Marques roundabout and Av. Liberdade, Expo 98 under Vasco da Gama long Park, Jardim Botânico near Príncipe Real. On outer Lisbon Tapada da Ajuda is the gem for me (it has the agro Uni. inside), Necessidades is a bit closer to the centre in the same direction. Monsanto is a huge Pine forest Park. on the southwest, only reachable by transport but by e-bike surely is a great ride, so large you can lost yourself there. In the park, beside a light, fresh meal (Use a freeze box), some chill and small talk, listen to the birds and let the hottest part of the day go by, with luck you can even watch some ships crossing by the Tejo (Tapada da Ajuda, expo  or Monsanto).

Spend the day on a River Cruise or anywhere inside water.  The norm is that the shore is usually up to 10% less hot than the interior, so if it is so hot in the Capital a boat ride is usually a refreshing and interesting activity. You can go for a sunset or dine and dance in a boat-restaurant but during the hot part of the day is also a way to challenge the heat for some hours. Also alternatives to this way of thinking are to go up the Tejo to the part not affected by the tides and discover the surrounding areas. Another great day is to go on a nature boat cruise either on Tejo at Mar da Palha or Setubal Estuary bog area, both national parks and birds and fish sanctuaries.

Spend a day in a Farm or historical Estates.  There’s many interesting programs at offer to spend a day in a diverse place such a leisure prepared rural environment (called or Turismo Rural ou de Habitacao), where you can develop several interesting activities, from the assured swimming pool activities, care or watch the farm’s animals, visit the manor house, taste the wines and during September you can even participate on a grape’s catch (vindimas), sightseeing, birdwatching, garden leisure, rest, fall asleep (important to lower the body temperature a bit) and any particular activities they might have. Some farms are close to the sea (& Beaches), some are enormous properties (Companhia das Lezirias and Escaroupim on the Tejo shore), some are historical houses that usually represent a noble Family (sometimes centuries of ownership) is now a flagship house for a winery or even Ganaderia (wild Bulls raising farm).

6 - Shelter yourselves in the apartment for a Sesta (Nap) and to break the day in two: Plan a light meal rest session at the apartment during this time of the day. So as the apartment is really central and close to 3 metro stations , you can easily come back, pick-uk some nice things from Pingo/Doce or Continente Supermarkets and head home to rest a bit, take just a cold shower, eat light and coldest possible and recover the energies for a second round of visit, preferably after 4pm (if windy maybe is fresher a bit earlier) to go out. Also a top-up activity after being at home is to head to the easiest Beach, Carcavelos or some nearby, on the train from Cais do Sodre (10 Minutes Walking or 3 Mins on an Uber. Arrive there at 4/5pm and stay until sunset on 7.30 until 9pm (Now appreciate the freshness of the end of the day), heres there’s plenty of cafes, gelatarias and beach bars for another recovering light meal, usually we have some Prawns/Shrimps or Clams with Beer (Working class has Tremocos along with the Beer).

7- Cave yourself under the soil or @ a Shopping Centre: Go under the Soil, visit one of the many caves (called Grutas) where it is really fresh and the scenery is always beautiful and astonishing, North of Lisbon 1 Hour drive there’s some 10 grand examples you might visit, Serra D’ Aire is the cave’s hotspot. Also on Central Lisbon there’s some underground historical interesting places such as on Rua Augusta the Roman arcades or the Mours baths under the Se Cathedral. Also to visit a Vineyard storage warehouse for a wine and regional food tasting session is also a must. In Portugal Shopping Centres are hugely populars so we have some big ones in Lisbon (Vasco da Gama, Colombo, Amoreiras, Loures, Oeiras, Cascais). So to go for a shopping spree under the cover of efficient central acclimatisation is also another way the Alfacinhas escape from the heat if they cannot leave the City.

LET YOURSELF EMERGE ON BURNING LISBON DAILY LIFE. Beach culture and general info

1 DAY AT A BEACH | THE VERY BEST OPTION. Sacrifice BELEM sweaty half day for an exciting nautical odyssey to BERLENGAS. a - So to go to the Beach all day is the easiest way to get rid of the heath and it’s what the majority of the Portuguese population do during the summer, specially on weekends, everyone tries to escape to the nearest or favourite beach or alternatively to one of the many dams spread throughout the country and/or fluvial beaches, it’s really our national past-time during the warm time of the year. Lisbon has several beaches on a radius of 50 Kms (Some 20 Beaches, 10 with blue flag), the most accessible are Linha de Cascais beaches (Notably the huge Carcavelos) and south margin estuary there’s Caparica which extends for some 15 Kms until Meco. I’ll write a detailed Guide about Beach culture and the best spots soon (Watch Out my Guide for 1 day travels around Lisbon the W N E S 1Day escapades). predict things and try to choose the warmest day of your holidays to be close to the Ocean is a safe bet for a memorable pleasant day (at least the warmest part of the day). ATTENTION: Watchout the danger zone hours sunbath, avoid the huge quantity of ultraviolet rays that flood midday hours, prefer sunshine up to 11 or after 4pm. Shelter on a beach Umbrella, wear light coloured T-shits, hat and sunglasses and use lots of sun protector. Swap the climbing up to Castelo for down into the Sea @ Carcavelos, Caxias or Caparica! b - A Brief Beach Description: NORTH COAST, ESTREMADURA PENINSULA BEACHES. - Carcavelos - Biggest on the northern shore, easily accessible by train (Cais do Sodré), facing South and with a very mild sea, fab for groups and Children, plenty of Beach Bars. Caparica - A strait long Beach that stretches for 15 Km from inner Caparica Town to the natural park of Arrabida, it ends in a Lagoon called Meco.  - Linha de Cascais Beaches - Beside Carcavelos the local XXL Beach there's a plethora of Town Beaches, each in front it´s own place: Caxias, Santo Amaro, Oeiras, Forte, Parede, São João. The final is the area of Cascais and Estoril, so to hit the Beach and after visit Cascais on the end of a hot day is an excellent program for an afternoon.   - Guincho, Cabo da Roca, Cascais/Estoril área - Where the coast turns north this huge promontory starts on Cascais’s Boca do Inferno, then it´s Guincho the Wind cathedral of the Portuguese coast (Windsurf paradise), with huge waves to surf but a dangerous sea. Cabo da Roca is the most western point of Europe (Along with Sagres), a fabulous place for a car-ride, Ocean sightseeing, selfies and splendorous sunset. Cascais as well as Estoril have excellent (small) Urban Beaches ringh in the middle of each Town.    - Sintra shoreline Beaches - North of Cabo da Roca there's a series of Beaches part of Sintra Conselho (Borough), all encrusted on the surrounding cliffs and below the huge Serra (Hill) of Sintra, beaches that neither are huge nor small, with plenty of local infraestructures for leisure activities. Starting on Praia Grande (big), das Maçãs (of Apples), Azenhas do Mar (Magoito) and a full hand of smaller ones. Colares is a seaside Town with idyllic beach or colonial (era) architecture, a super pleasant place to stop between the hills and the Sea.     - Ericeira up to Peniche - Ericeira is a very pleasant and beautiful seaside Town, a surfer’s hotspot, heritage artisanal fishing and the prefered place for affluent Alfacinhas (Lisbon folks) to have a weekend Villa (called Moradia). This coast is rough with small beaches in between, excellent for scuba diving and cliff’s fishing. Peniche is a fishing port, on a small peninsula with a great surf beach called Supertubos and some mystic and marvelous islets’ arquipelago called Berlengas, after Peniche and Baleal) there’s 2 large lagoons with great beaches (Foz do Arelho and São Martinho do Porto) with Nazare further up north on the end of this cliffed coast (home of the biggest wave in the world). Be aware that this coast is always fresher than Lisbon and the country’s south or interior, it’s frequent during summer to have cloudy mornings, moist and cold during night if windy and sometimes an temperature difference of more than 15 degrees (Say  on the same latitude there’s 37 in Vila Franca de Xira on the Tejo and it’s 23 in Peniche on the coast. So to escape to this seashore is always aN easy way to escape the heath spikes and highs if easy transport is available. 2. SOUTH MARGIN, SETUBAL PENINSULA BEACHES: After the very long Caparica Beach, you’ll Meco and it’s lagoon, Sesimbra, Portinho da Arrábida and other Arrábida Beaches - South of Caparica (On the hearth of Setubal Peninsula) there's a series of Beaches down the cliffs, hard to reach (mostly by foot, going down the cliff through stairs), but the intrinsic beauty of these beaches makes them worth the physical effort to reach them, Portinho da Arrabida is probably the most beautiful beach in Portugal, totally hidden, facing south with turquoise waters, the only ones who´ll bother you will be the dolphins. Sesimbra is another seaside Town that descends a mild cliff, which creates an impressive urban scenery. Also the best fish and seafood around the capital.  Between these two areas there’s a City called Setubal, unique for it’s character, very fine seafood or fish and a very interesting old Town around the bay area, Jose Mourinho call Setubal Home. Troia, Comporta and Sado Fluvial Beaches - On the next big river estuary, the Sado and it´s City of Setubal, there´s another natural marvel setup, with a big Bog/swamped natural park area, a great sand peninsula (Troia) with it’s long sandy beaches and lots of pine forest spots is a very calm and peaceful place. Comporta is a super posh, private condominium new urban sprawl, a recently built huge resort where you can go to a beach with high social expectations and all the luxury industry has to offer, after Comporta there’s another 20 kms of virgin unbuilt coast the paradise for the ones who want to feel alone near the Sea, this until Porto Covo.
