The Rim restaurant, located in the Volcano House, overlooks the rim of Kilauea caldera and showcases spectacular views of billowing Halema‘uma‘u Crater. At least 95% of the restaurant’s meat, seafood, fruit and vegetables are sourced from local ranchers, farmers and suppliers. This restaurant is about a ten minute drive from Fiddlehead House, and, depending on the time of day, you would have to purchase a Park pass or show your receipt for a pass already purchased, to gain entry into HVNP.

Parks & Nature

The Kapoho Tide Pools, about one hour away from Volcano, are one of the most amazing places to snorkel on the Big Island. To find them use your GPS (Google or Apple). It will take you to a private road (Kapoho Kai Drive) where signage will direct you where to park. Then take a 5 to 10 minute flat stroll through a beautiful neighborhood until you hit some trees and a trail leading to the water. The pools are incredible - they are crystal clear and there is a remarkable diversity of sea life for you to explore. Please consider wearing a reef friendly sunscreen - the sea life will thank you for it!

Richardson’s Beach and Ocean Park is a wonderful spot for swimming, snorkeling and picnicking. The beach is protected by a natural lava rock seawall making it a great place to take children. As well as the salt water pools there are several spring-fed freshwater ponds. They are icy! Dipping into one of them makes for a refreshing experience extraordinaire!

Punalu’u Black Sand Beach is just a 30 minute drive south of Volcano. Famous for its volcanic black sand beach Punalu’u is also known for its community of endangered Hawksbill turtles and green turtles. We have seen as many as twenty of them at one time basking in the sun on the beach! Coconut palms line the beach and provide lovely shady spots for relaxing and picnicking. Swimming at Punalu’u is possible but is not recommended if the surf is high.

Visiting the park is an absolute must if you are staying in Volcano. The entrance station is only a 5 minute drive from Fiddlehead House. There are miles/kilometers of hiking trails, and it is also one of the most accessible National Parks, for visitors who use walkers or wheelchairs. The Park never closes, so, visitors can drive up, after dark, to see the summit eruption's underground lava lake, which sometimes rises up within view, from Jaggar Museum. A $25 pass admits a single vehicle and all of its passengers for 7 days. Go to http://www.nps.gov/havo and http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov for more information about the Park.
