City/town information

One of the most popular reasons to visit Pickens is its easy access to the area’s many outdoor attractions and natural wonders. Set in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this small Upstate city has long claimed the motto “Where the Mountains Begin,” capitalizing on its convenient location near the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Highway, beautiful waterfalls and trails, and Table Rock State Park with its stunning CCC-era Lodge offering a commanding view of the massive granite dome. The city also boasts plenty of its own recreational offerings, including the new off-road Town Creek Bike Park, the 7.5-mile paved Doodle Trail built on an abandoned rail line, and the 23-acre Jaycee Park, home to a variety of sports facilities.

Travelers Rest, SC . OUR FAVORITE PLACES: by Furman Univ. Library Staff Topsoil in Travelers Rest for brunch on Saturday or Sunday is one of my favorites! I also like driving up 25 to Flat Rock and Sky Top Orchard for apples and apple picking. • Las Meras Tortas for tortas (2 locations) • Caesar’s Head state park, for the lookout, but also for the waterfall trail on the other side of the highway. • Revival Butchery in the West End for local proteins and French cheeses. • Day drinkers in San Souci for excellent coffee and chill surroundings • Drive Route 11 east from 25 in Traveler’s Rest to Campobello, and then go up to Landrum and have lunch at the Hare and Hound pub. • Pita House, always Pita House • Drive up past Hotel Domestique in TR and go up past the county reservoirs to get to Saluda, NC and eat BBQ at Green River. Or go to the bakery. Breakfast ▪ Tandem Creperie in Traveler’s Rest ▪ Biscuit Head in Downtown Greenville ▪ Tupelo Honey in Downtown Greenville ▪ Mountain Goat Coffee/Waffles o Lunch/Dinner ▪ Sofrito’s on Woodruff Rd (Caribbean/Latin American) ▪ Taqueria Mixtepec in Cherrydale (they are always sofriendly and the food is amazing!) ▪ Windy City Burgers in Downtown Greenville (I found this burger place by accident and it’s great. They make their buns in house and grind their own meet) ▪ Todaro Pizza in Downtown Greenville Coffee and/or Desert ▪ Village Grind ▪ Old Europe ▪ Spill the Beans • Activities/Sights Biking/Walking on the Swamp Rabbit Trail Hiking at Paris Mountain Viewing the entries in the National Gingerbread House Contest held up in Asheville. This always fun because of how creative people get. I had to add it in since it will be coming up soon! The Biltmore Estate in Asheville o Walking at Connestee Nature Preserve I’ll mention my closer in go-to for a drive through a pretty, natural setting. The Greenville Watershed. Head north on 25 and after passing underneath Highway 11, take the first right onto Old Highway 25. Stay on it until you exit the Watershed, at which point you almost immediately cross the NC state line. Shortly after that, take a left onto Bobbs Creek Rd. which leads to an on ramp for Highway 25 for a more direct route back to TR. A cool bonus of driving through the Watershed, other than the pretty scenery and some sharp, switchback-like curves, is that the drive intersects with Mountain Page Rd., which is an alternate way of driving to Saluda. Note that there are signs prohibiting stopping or parking in the Watershed, but it’s a nice option for a pretty drive that’s fairly close to Greenville. Best Ice Cream: Jeni’s Ice Cream - Amazing flavors that change frequently. (conveniently located next to Insomnia Cookies. Best Food: The Anchorage - Farm to table fresh ingredients. Get the chef’s tasting as you get to try everything on the ever-changing menu. Best BBQ: Lewis BBQ for the brisket (life changing) Moe’s for everything else (highly recommend the smoked turkey) Best cocktail: Swordfish Cocktail Club Best beer: Community Tap - Great locations with lots of local craft beer love Best coffee: Methodical - The only place I can drink a cup of just plain, black coffee because it is just so dang good. Bonus: Favorite outdoor spot – Jumping Off Rock - Easy gravel road drive to one of the most beautiful places in the US. Rise Bakery in the West End of Greenville is a serious bakery. They get bread right and they get pastries right. I could eat one of their boules every day of the week. My other favorite place for baked sweet things is Old Europe Desserts on Main Street downtown. It is open late when you need dessert. DuPont State Forest is just a 30-mile drive from here and it is one of my favorite places in the world. Miles of trail for hiking or mountain biking and amazing waterfalls. Also a great place to go swimming in the summer (have also done it in January but don’t recommend it for the general population). Closer to home I love walking or riding my bike on the Swamp Rabbit Trail to get sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies at Upcountry Provisions in TR. The “Upcountry” and the “Swamp rabbit” are my favorites. You can take those to go and stop at the TR (Community) Tap to sit on their covered porch and have a beer, wine, or soda and eat your lunch and watch everyone ride by on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Like Mary and Maggie I also like Miracle Hill for thrifting but the Safe Harbor Resale Shop on Wade Hampton is also excellent. My favorites are downtown spots: #1) M Judson Booksellers and Camilla Kitchen inside: must eat is the Spicy Ginger Molasses Cookie! Browse to your heart’s content, great reading recommendations from staff, and many cozy corners to curl up in with either a book or a cookie, or both! #2 recommendation: The Peace Center, downtown performing arts complex. So many offerings in all different genres and art forms. There are 3 venues, the outdoor amphitheater next to the river with the Peace Pavilion, the Gunter Theater for smaller, intimate concert/theater experiences, and the beautiful Peace Concert Hall for large productions. The only favorite place I have to offer is the Connestee Nature Preserve – I’m a homebody and it’s one of the only places I go often. It has a nice loop of mostly flat, mostly paved trail with lots of tree cover, plus additional trails through the forest. It’s really beautiful and calm, and a great place for a walk/run or short hike. Swamp Rabbit stecca is one of Maggie's favorite foods! She can eat a whole loaf of it in 24 hrs. We also like... Boardwalk Games for all things fun and geeky. Bonus: three of the four members of the Menzer-Rogers family work there (Tim is the manager). Lying down on the circle of grass near the bridge in Falls Park and staring up at the night sky. Halva, falafel, and namoura from the Pita House. The Kroc Center when the need for a waterslide hits during the middle of winter. Otter Creek when it hits during the usual summer season. The Melting Pot when Maggie had a bad day at school or we need to feel pampered. The Tree House art cafe for leisurely Saturday breakfasts with crafts. Tandem, like you and Shawn, especially for the foam artistry of their baristas. Miracle Hill in TR for almost all of our non-intimate apparel plus fun surprises. Elderberry gimlet at Fork and Plough. Wildcat Wayside. It’s not far outside TR and makes a great place to sit and think with a peaceful waterfall, wade, hike a little, or a hike a little longer. You can often get boiled peanuts in the parking lot during the summer. We like to snag ice cream cones from Pink Mama's and mosey the Swamp Rabbit Trail, especially when TR has seasonal decorations up to enjoy. And I'd be remiss to fail to recommend signing up for the birthday rewards offered by Sidewall Pizza and Monkey wrench Smokehouse. They give birthday and half-birthday coupons! You stole my idea of Tandem, but two of my other favorite places are Pretty Place and Aunt Sue’s up on Highway 11. One of our favorites places is Asheville. Early Girl or Sunny Point for breakfast, Mayfel’s for dinner, French Broad for all things sweet.
