One of our top 5 restaurant recommendations on the island. GORGEOUS open-air fine-dining restaurant in a tropical garden setting just a block from Jungalow Escalante! Mid-high end prices but SO WORTH IT! This is some of the best food you'll have in Belize. Belizean owned. Open from 5-9pm only, closed Tuesdays.

You can't go wrong with Blue Water Grill. Prices are mid-high range and their food is superb. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. Beautiful open-air restaurant with iconic views of the Caribbean Sea. Home to the first "I Love Belize" sign. Fantastic nightly bar scene up until about 9pm. Live music some weekends. Sushi nights. MAKE DINNER RESERVATIONS WHEN POSSIBLE. This place gets BUSY.

Hungry Grouper is a relative newcomer to the San Pedro food scene but has ranked #1 on TripAdvisor for some time. It's a small, sandy floor local spot for some absolutely delicious local seafood and Belizean style food. It's one of our top 5 spots to recommend to guests. Try it out! Beware the place is small and in high season they can get BUSY.

This is the best and only authentic Japanese restaurant in Belize. Owner and master sushi chef Toshiya opened this restaurant in early 2017 and has received phenomenal reviews. He has been a sushi chef from Japan to Malta to San Francisco. Check out their Facebook page for their nightly specials if you are on a budget. They also have tons of special events like live music, live painting, and lots of creative stuff. There is also a new Tea Lounge where can you work on wifi on the second floor. You will not be disappointed!!

Victoria House is an iconic Ambergris Caye luxury hotel with a fantastic bar/restaurant that is open daily to the public for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's a gorgeous resort with beautiful beachfront dining and fantastic food. Prices are in U.S. dollars and on the high end. Great for lunch. Go to Palmilla Bar/Restaurant, located in the palapa right on the beach to eat. Warning that your check will have 11% gratuity included already. So if you liked your service just tip 5-10% on top of that. (Tipping in Belize is the customary 15-20% as in the U.S.)

Now REOPENED 3/2021! Brand new, high-end rooftop bar with food cart and gorgeous views the reef and the lagoon — right in the middle of town! Pricey but draws a good crowd of mostly local 20-30somethings and the “who’s who” of San Pedro. Also gorgeous for photos at sunset (hence the name). As with all open-air bars in San Pedro, this closes at midnight. Warning you must walk up 4 flights of stairs to get to this bar! If you are still trying to go out after closing, ask any local how to find “INTRO” which is a sort of speakeasy nightclub a short walk away. It gets busy after midnight when all the beach bars close. They aren’t advertised anywhere.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is a San Pedro MUST DO! Swim with sharks, stingrays, turtles, and plenty of beautiful fish! Trips range from $40 - $60USD per person, and any dive shop goes here 1-2x per day. This less-frequented snorkel spot is excellent because the coral heads are large and the water not so deep, so you can easily snorkel and see a lot without having to freedive. Frequented by sea turtles and many types of fish. I've even seen a squid and dolphins nearby here.

Secret Beach started out as an obscure hangout for Belizean families on Sundays. Within the past few years this has become the #1 traveler destination on Ambergris Caye thanks to the shallow, aquamarine water for days. Now there are a dozen bars and food venues here with volleyball nets, picnic tables in the water, jet ski rentals, and all kinds of people taking selfies. 🤣 There is no sargasso seaweed here, since this is on the lagoon side of the island. You need a golf cart to get here! It’s definitely a San Pedro MUST DO. *Warning that you will be offered drugs here. We STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST PARTICIPATING IN ANY HARD DRUG SCENE HERE IN BELIZE. It is unsafe and these are not people you want to interact with. Just politely decline. Also, on the north side you may come across Belizean kids that ask for rides, ask you to donate money to their sports teams, and offer up other elaborate stories. DO NOT GIVE RIDES TO ANYONE TO OR FROM SECRET BEACH. There are sometimes petty scams and it’s best to avoid giving strangers rides where it can be secluded. In town south of the bridge, where it’s busy, it’s totally fine to give rides to women and children, or men if you are comfortable with that. Many Belizeans (and tourists) simply do not have golf carts. My simple rule is that I only give rides during daylight hours to tourists, women, children, or men in uniform.

One of the only "high-end" grocery stores in San Pedro. This place is pricey and smaller, but has higher quality stuff than Super Buy. Has a selection of health foods, spices, and hard to find fresh produce. Warning: any North American chips, crackers, sweets, cookies, or cereals will be exorbitantly priced anywhere in Belize. Seriously, like $15USD for a little box of Wheaties. Bring from home if you need to eat prepackaged snacks or cereals!

This is a large grocery store that has most of what you will need as far as packaged or frozen items, cereal, yogurt, butter, milk etc. Grocery shopping can be a challenge on an island. There are no "healthy" foods here, mostly mass-produced sort of stuff. CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATES. Not recommended for fresh bread or fruits / veggies. Buy bread at The Baker across the street. Buy fresh produce at any streetside fruit stand. Any type of American chips, crackers, cookies, sweets or snacks will be crazy overpriced and likely stale and expired.

Getting Around

This is the only gas station that you will use if you need to fill up your golf cart! They close around 7 or 8pm. It is illegal to pump your own gas in Belize so just pull up and wait your turn to be helped by the nice guys working there. You can tip them a few bucks and make their day. Note: unless you are in San Pedro for over a week you should not need to fill your tank. (Fun fact: I fill ours every 6 weeks and it costs $75BZD.)

This is our go-to cart rental spot for the past 4 years and we know these guys well. If you are interested in renting a golf cart, please text us through Airbnb and we will schedule a cart to be dropped off to you within about an hour. These carts are super clean, ride smoother than some of the other companies, and are well-maintained. They have 24 hour assistance should you need it. (You shouldn’t). They offer free cart drop off and pick-up, and they will also drop you off at water taxi or airport when you return the cart. Scam-free company.

This is how you will arrive by international flight into Belize. The airport code is BZE. Once you get through Immigration and Customs, you can take a gorgeous scenic 12-15 minute flight via Tropic Air or Maya Air to San Pedro. The price is around $65-$85USD/person each way. (Maya Air will be around $10 cheaper per person.) Both companies are very reputable and safe. Alternately, you can take a cab from BZE to the water taxi dock in Belize City (about $25USD) , and then take the 1.5 hour boat to San Pedro (around $15US/person). We highly recommend the flight! It's not that much more expensive than the boat when you consider cab fare and time saved.
