NCSU is a beautiful place to walk! My favorite restaurant nearby is The Players Retreat at the corner of Hillsborough St. And Oberlin Rd. This is a true locals spot that’s been around for decades! Cup-A-Joe is my favorite coffee shop, another favorite of the locals.

This beautiful sate park is halfway between downtown Raleigh and RDU airport and covers 5,599 acres. Hikers, trail runners, bicyclists and equestrians cherish the extensive network of hiking and multi use trails. Accessible form I-40 west and I-70 west. Includes 3 manmade lakes, the largest being Big Lake where you can rent canoes and row boats. Fishing is welcome at all the lakes and creeks. At both entrances there is access to picnic grounds with shelters and fireplaces that can be reserved. For organizations and nonprofit groups, primitive group campsites are available as well as 2 group camps with cabins, mess halls and wash houses. Historic Maple Hill Lodge can be reserved for overnight group gatherings. A tent campground is open during summer months.

Food scene

Anchored by the State Capitol, Raleigh’s revitalized downtown includes indie art spaces in the warehouse district and family friendly animal exhibits at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. The Duke Energy Center stages classical concerts, opera, and ballet. Cool cocktail bars and global eateries line Fayetteville St. and sit among gourmet shops at City Market, in a building dating from 1914. Downtown Raleigh has emerged as a vibrant center of activity that continues to welcome historic growth and investment. As an apex of commerce and government, it is also home to a thriving creative culture with artists, musicians, innovative tech companies, award-winning chefs, and cutting edge makers working to create the downtown Raleigh experience. First Friday is a celebration of art, culture and community on the 1st Friday of every month from 6-9pm. Downtown Raleigh boasts many locally-owned, independent shops with Deco being a long time favorite. With so many great restaurants it’s hard to pick a favorite but Brewery Bhavana and Humble Pie are at the top of list. A few more suggestions are…Raleigh Times, a casual, fun restaurant with a rooftop bar, Sir Walter coffee shop is also a cocktail bar at night and Morgan St. Food hall has lots of local dining options.

Regenerating Glenwood South draws in crowds for it’s cluster of hip-vintage clothing stores, art galleries, and yoga studios in former warehouses along Glenwood Ave. A buzzing after dark scene includes taverns selling craft beer, smart DJ lounges, and speak easy style cocktail bars with nightly jazz concerts. Most eating options have outdoor seats and include classic steak houses, Mexican taco bars, or sushi spots. My favorites are Raleigh Beer Garden (world’s largest selection of draft beers), Sushi Blues and La Santa (modern Mexican).

Less than a mile from our duplex you’ll find The Village District (formerly known as Cameron Village). There are more than 100 unique and distinctive shops, cafes, restaurants and services. Stroll 6 blocks and explore 1 of a kind shops, specialty stores and national favorites. Dine indoors or out at the many cafes and restaurants. You’ll find 2 grocery stores, 2 pharmacies, numerous banks, county library, ABC liquor store, salons, spas, gyms, urgent care and more! My favorite restaurant is Tazza but kids will be fascinated by the ONLY 2 story Chic-Fil-a in the world! On the corner of Oberlin Rd. Van Dyke Ave. you’ll find Community Deli, it doesn’t look like much but it is the BEST homemade food (breakfast and lunch only)! Outside seating only. The soups and veggies are fabulous as well as all the sandwiches.

Neighborhoods

Minutes from our duplex you’ll find the area we call Five Points along Glenwood Ave. And Fairview Rd. There is great shopping, dining, and entertainment options, including antique stores, art galleries, restaurants, bars, pharmacies, convenience stores, churches, a bank, coffee shop, post office and a theater. Parking is available along the streets and behind some buildings. Five Points features the Rialto Theater, one of the area’s few remaining independent movie theaters. The theater opened it’s doors in 1942 and specializes in independent, foreign and alternative films. My favorite restaurants are Nofo (great gift store as well) and Hayes Barton Cafe & Dessertery (famous for their HUGE, delicious cake slices). Lola’s is a fun “beach bar”.
