Beaches

Fort Worden has it all - beaches, trails, camping, hiking, wildlife. Even restaurants! There are miles of forested trails, long beautiful stretches of beach, and historic remnants from the park's former life as a military installation. There is truly something for everyone here!

One of the longest beach-walks in Port Townsend proper is a 3 mile stretch from "North Beach" to "Glass Beach." Glass Beach is at the foot of the bluff where the local dump used to be - a treasure trove for glass, ceramics, and other beach-combing delights. This walk also follows the Strait of Juan de Fuca, so it's teeming with wildlife, too!

This is about a 15-minute drive from the hotel and has a vast stretch of public beach for enjoyment. This beach is also very active with wildlife, has a nice forested trail overlooking the beach, and all the beach you can walk! Here you'll find outstanding tide pools - sand dollars, sea cucumber, and sea anemones are some of the most unique animals on display here. The road you'll take to get here is also your gateway to Marrowstone Island, another lovely area to drive around or explore for additional beaches (including Fort Worden’s sister fort, Fort Flagler).

Trails

The Larry Scott trailhead is at the PT boatyard and this flat, wide, and well-lit trail sits nice and high above the water, which it follows for over a mile.

The Cicheman trail is another crowning achievement of the community and was only recently completed. It is an educational exhibit woven throughout town that helps contextualize the history of the area and the indigenous people who came before. There are over 30 miles of public trails woven throughout Port Townsend neighborhoods - for example, I can walk from my house (near the golf course) to North Beach and can do so primarily via these trails instead of sidewalks along major roadways. It's very special! Here is a link to learn more: https://www.co.jefferson.wa.us/DocumentCenter/View/952/Port-Townsend-Walking-Map-PDF

Smile and wave!

The small-town tradition of connecting with those sharing the trail or beach is alive and well in Port Townsend. Smile, wave, and offer a hello if you're close enough.

Tide Schedule!

Before heading out to any pacific northwest beach, especially for a long walk, please check the tide schedule! It is no fun to swim in hiking boots! Here is an accurate tide chart: https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/noaatidepredictions.html?id=9444900&legacy=1
