Our favorite places to eat and drink near Mount Forge!
Every time we go to Glacier National Park I always order the same thing, an Eggs Benedict Burrito and an Iced Americano to go. It's the perfect meal & coffee to fuel up for a long hike at the park. We've eaten breakfast here more than anywhere else in the area because it is so good. It has an awesome vibe with some amazing historical photos of Polson inside and a long list of delicious breakfast & lunch foods. The Huckleberry Club Sandwich is my favorite lunch item as well. If you're staying at Mt. Forge, a stop at Blodgett's is an absolute must.

Montana Bonfire
15300 Montana Hwy 35It has become a regular routine for us to stop at Bonfire on our way home from Glacier National Park. We've been here a few times now and the menu is always different, but equally incredible. They rotate it seasonally and it sets the bar very high for dining in the Flathead Lake region. If you want to see what a vintage drive in restaurant was like 50 years ago, head on over to Burgerville right on the lake in Polson. It's a drive through only restaurant with pretty good burgers. I'd compare them to something like In n' Out or Five Guys. They have the best huckleberry shakes in Polson for sure. Richwine's Burgerville
50567 US-93If you want to see what a vintage drive in restaurant was like 50 years ago, head on over to Burgerville right on the lake in Polson. It's a drive through only restaurant with pretty good burgers. I'd compare them to something like In n' Out or Five Guys. They have the best huckleberry shakes in Polson for sure. It's a great treat after a long day on the lake or a great dessert to go with your pizza from The Cove.

Our favorite things to do at the Crown of the Continent!
The Sperry Chalet is one of the most amazing historical landmarks in America. Originally built over 100 years ago, it stands deep in the wilderness of Glacier National Park. In 2017 it unfortunately was burned in a forest fire an has since been refurbished. We hiked the Sperry Trail once before in 2019 and it was amazing (and very challenging).
This time though, we had the incredible opportunity to stay overnight at the Chalet. You have two ways to get a reservation at the Chalet, the first is reserving a space the day that reservations for that season open up. Even then it is first come first serve and the entire season (usually early July to early September) fills up in less than a few hours. The other option is to do what I did and spend every day for 2 weeks prior to our trip refreshing the website hoping for a cancellation to open up, and much to my surprise one did! I immediately booked it and surprised Nicole for her birthday.
Nicole and I feel a strong connection to the Sperry Chalet and I'm sure this will not be the last time we stay here. Our next goal is to plan a through hike from Jackson Glacier Overlook to Lake McDonald via the Gunsight Pass Trail.

Sperry Chalet

The Gunsight Pass Trail is one of the most iconic trails in Glacier National Park. It runs just under 19 miles from the Jackson Glacier Overlook on Going-To-The-Sun Road to the Lake McDonald Lodge. If you do the entire trail you'll pass some incredible sights such as Gunsight Lake, Lake Ellen Wilson, and the Sperry Chalet.
On this trip we just decided to hike out and back to Gunsight Lake, which comes out to about 13 miles. The first half of the hike starts with a steep downhill for a mile and then heads through dense woods for the next 2-3 miles. Be very bear aware during this entire hike, it is less traveled than some of the popular trails in the park and goes through prime grizzly territory. About 3 miles in we saw a moose off in the distance across the river. It was very foggy for us and our views were limited.
Once we got to Gunsight Lake our day changed dramatically. The sun started peeking through the clouds and pushed the fog out. We were very close to heading back until the fog cleared and we had an incredible view across the lake for lunch. We saw a second moose (it was MASSIVE with big antlers) shortly after that. The weather warmed up a lot and it actually became a hot hike back to the parking lot.
Since it cleared up, our views on the hike back were unbelievable. We couldn't believe how massive the mountains were and that they were hidden so well from the clouds and fog in the AM.
That last mile coming back is a real doozy. The last thing you really want after hiking 12 miles is a very steep 1 mile incline. It was pretty brutal, but in the end so worth it. We loved this hike so much and look forward to planning a two-night through hike in the future!

Hiking & Fishing
Some of the best places to go hiking and fishing near Mount Forge!
We attempted to do this hike in April of 2020 and we found out the hard way that snow doesn't melt that high up in the mountains until WAY later in the season. This hike is really only accessible from late July to October until the first snowfalls start to come.
We made the trip out in August 2020 and it was incredible. The hike is a steady incline with the first 1.5 miles through thick woods. Then it starts to open up and once you hit the ridge-line, the views become spectacular. We were absolutely mind-blown upon seeing the panoramic views.
About halfway through the hike you'll come to a section with 3 different trail options. DO NOT take the middle option. This path is clearly steeper (and therefore shorter). We elected this option and it was the steepest and most physically brutal section of hiking we've ever been on. It's not a bad choice for the way down, but going up be sure to choose the path to the right that is a longer but much more gradual incline.
Shortly thereafter, Nicole started singing a "billy goat chant" in hopes of making one appear. Much to my surprise, less than a minute after she stopped singing, we saw a beautiful white creature walking up the trail ahead of us. A group of hikers up ahead stepped off the trail and let him pass, we knew he was coming our way next. He stayed right on course and walked immediately past us as we stepped off to let him pass by. It was an incredible experience seeing wildlife that close in person!

Nicole and I spent 3 months quarantined at Mount Forge from March to June 2020. We were looking for a hobby to pick up while we were out there. Aside from the hiking and adventuring, we decided to pick up a few fishing rods and try to teach ourselves how to catch the coveted Lake Trout (also known as Mackinaw). After a few failed attempts with our Walmart fishing rods, we decided to get some information from an expert. We asked around and we heard that Dick Zimmer is the Mackinaw king. Dick has been fishing for Macks in Flathead Lake for 70 years. There isn't a human being on the planet that is more qualified to catch fish in Flathead Lake than Dick.
Zimmer tackle is right off of Rt. 93 in Ronan. It has an insane amount of products inside, most of which I never heard of before. I walked in and explained our situation, that we are out of town fishing novices and were looking to learn how to catch lake trout. Dick proceeded to ask tons of questions, what type of boat we had, what our gear was, so on and so forth. He then told us how and where the fish were biting at this time in the season, what type of rigs they were biting on, and how to use them. They make custom lures and supply all of the local stores that have fishing supplies. I even bought a handbook on jig-fishing that he wrote. The customer service experience was unbelievable. You can tell how knowledgeable and passionate Dick is about fishing.
We ended up using a lot of their homemade cut bait and having tons of success over the rest of our quarantine trip. If you're going to be fishing in Western Montana, Zimmer Tackle is the place to answer any questions you have. Dick frequently reminds me to call him if I ever have any questions. Their entire staff loves fishing and they want you to enjoy it just as much as they do.

When we were quarantined at Mount Forge earlier this year we would regularly take Forge here in the evenings.
When it comes to fishing, this is a fun place to go for a quick fishing adventure. The second entrace (western side) and along the dike is a great spot. Just be careful on the rocks. If you like fishing for pike and bass, this is perfect for you. You can pull some big ones out of here. Make sure you stop by Zimmer Tackle before heading out!
Once the winter hits, Pablo is a very popular ice fishing destination as well. We're excited to give this a try on our next winter trip.

Beautiful sights you can only see in Montana.
Montana is home to many incredible adventures. You can go hiking in Glacier National Park, fishing in Flathead Lake, and many other amazing things. If you are looking to truly slow down and find your inner peace, look no further than the Ewam Garden of One Thousand Buddhas. The Garden of One Thousand Buddhas is a public park, botanical garden and Buddhist center in the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. If you're not interested in the meditation aspect, the garden itself is at least a beautiful sight to see.

From the 1860s to the 1890s there was a gold rush in the hills of Montana. Gold was struck and people flocked from all over to try and earn fortunes for themselves. Today there are several ghost towns that are still preserved with original buildings still standing.
We took an adventure to Garnet Ghost town to see for ourselves. Garnet is located up on top of a mountain next to some beautiful campgrounds and hiking trails. We spend a couple hours walking around the trails and the town and it was amazing to see the classic style buildings and feel like you're going back in time. Everything is very well preserved and incredibly informative. There's even a cabin on site that you can rent in the fall and winter months. We most definitely plan on returning to see it for ourselves.

We went on a Thursday and it couldn't have been any more perfect. There were zero lines all day at any of the lifts and the snow was amazing. The staff is very friendly and informed. We had so much fun riding this mountain. They even have a ticket option for beginner skiers like Nicole where you pay a fraction of the cost to access the lower lifts and easy slopes. We can't wait for our next Mount Forge trip in the winter to go again!

This place is a great view into the history of the indigenous people that occupied the region for thousands of years. There are amazing handmade artifacts and beautiful stories of the tribes of Montana. It's an important place to see so you can understand the history of the Montana that we see today.

Ninepipes Museum of Early Montana
69316 US-93There are several museums in the area near Mount Forge, but none are based around the Native American history quite like Ninepipes. This place is a great view into the history of the indigenous people that occupied the region for thousands of years. There are amazing handmade artifacts and beautiful stories of the tribes of Montana. It's an important place to see so you can understand the history of the Montana that we see today.

My dad was visiting Mount Forge and he wanted to see a museum, so we headed into town to check out the Miracle of America Museum. We weren't exactly sure what we were getting into, but we ended up being completely blown away. The owner started off as a collector of Americana and eventually built such a large collection that in 1981 Gil & Joanne Mangels just had to begin showcasing it for the public to see. Miracle of America Museum
36094 Memory LnMy dad was visiting Mount Forge and he wanted to see a museum, so we headed into town to check out the Miracle of America Museum. We weren't exactly sure what we were getting into, but we ended up being completely blown away. The owner started off as a collector of Americana and eventually built such a large collection that in 1981 Gil & Joanne Mangels just had to begin showcasing it for the public to see. Just finished dinner and looking for something to do? Take a drive up the road to Kerr Dam. It's a gorgeous 205 foot tall dam that regulates the level of Flathead Lake. There is a boardwalk with a couple hundred steps that take you down to a beautiful vista overlooking the dam. It's close by and an easy walk down (a little harder going up!!) If you're staying at Mount Forge it's a very low friction but beautiful thing to see. You can even fly over the dam with Blue Goose Aviation!

There is a bison roundup in early October every year where the Bison are nowhere to be found, but as long as you're in before then you will have an unbelievable time. We've seen elk, mule deer, bears, and tons of bison up close. It's the closest thing you'll get to an African Safari right here in Montana.

They have a full snack stand with pretty solid food for a sporting event. Considering admission is just $10 (free for kids under 7), it's probably the best thing you can do in Polson on a Friday or Saturday night.

All of the wines are made from fruits grown on Flathead Lake, which is some of the most fertile soil in the world. If you're expecting a sugary fruit wine experience, you'll be in for a surprise. These wines, while not made from grapes, have the perfect taste of wine mixed with the unique flavors of the fruits they're made with. This is a must have while at Mount Forge, and a strong recommendation to take home with you. She is an artist in multiple ways, she hand paints the label designs herself.

Western Cider - The Best Cider Ever Made
When we spent 3 months during the COVID quarantine at Mount Forge, I started off drinking beers. I bought a six pack of local beers and Nicole bought some Western Ciders. She offered me to try a cider and I didn't buy a single beer the rest of the time we were out there. I was a beer to cider convert instantly. When I tell you that we lived on this stuff during the quarantine, I'm not joking. The cans you can buy at the gas stations and grocery stores in Polson are delicious. They also have a tasting room in Missoula where they serve their small batch flavors and sell bottles to take home.

Montana Huckleberries
Huckleberries are a one of a kind Montana staple. Huckleberries are a unique fruit that can only be grown in patches deep in the wilderness. People spend months camping in the woods every summer to gather these delicious berries. They are a favorite treat for all wildlife, especially bears, so it's risky business!
You can get anything you want huckleberry flavored in Montana, but you can't get them anywhere else so take advantage!

The Breakfast Special - The Best Breakfast Deal in Montana
The Breakfast Special is a hidden gem in Polson. It's something you won't be able to find easily, but I'm here to give you some advice that will change your life. Go over to the Super 1 in Polson, meat section. Here you'll find a package with ten sausage links, a half dozen eggs, and six hash browns. All for the incredible price of $5.99 (as of summer 2020). If it's only two of you, beware of trying to eat it all in one sitting, it's a six-dollar-feast-for-a-king. A great little hack is to get an extra half dozen eggs and the meal will be perfect for two people twice or a group of four.
