Food scene

Here are a few suggestions - please be aware that if places accept bookings it's definitely worth making a reservation as far in advance as possible in peak summer season.
A vegetarian cafe set in a beautiful garden. This place is so chilled and relaxing and the food is fresh and delicious with many ingredients sourced from the kitchen garden on site. The glasshouse is a great place to dine and you can even partake in a game of ping pong! Lots of lovely outdoor seating areas too if you prefer to eat alfresco. Opening hours vary so it's best to check online. It's usually open for Brunch and Lunch.

The Blue Bar in Porthtowan is a great place to enjoy a drink in the sunshine on the terrace overlooking the beach. There is usually live music on the weekend and the food is generally good though not always consistently so.

We stumbled upon this place on a day out to Kynance Cove and were delighted to discover a little terrace out the back perched on the edge of the cove where we enjoyed the freshest of seafood and met the fisherman who had caught the fish just hours before! The daughter has recently taken over the running of the restaurant from her father and I haven't been since this happened so can't say for sure it's the same but definitely worth a try. Just be aware there is no toilet in the cafe so don't get caught short as it's a little walk away : )

Nestled in amongst industrial units is this unlikely gem. Don’t expect fine dining or a romantic luncheon but it is a great little spot to enjoy a casual breakfast or lunch and pick up some delicious artisan bread and pastries to go.

If you fancy grabbing lunch on the go or getting some pasties for a beach picnic this is the place to go.

Daaku is a fabulous Indian restaurant located in the heart of Falmouth. It's a little pricier than your average Indian but the taste and quality is next level. You can place bookings on their website for dinner and it's definitely a good idea to book ahead regardless of the season!

Beaches

A beautiful little bay - try and time your visit for low tide so you can enjoy a bit of a longer walk and check out the tidal swimming pool which is located among the rocks on your right as you’re facing the sea. Its also great for surfing and there are a number of surf hire and tuition shops along the front if you fancy giving it a go. Also a couple of good pubs/bars for refreshments and a village shop for supplies. Make sure you get there early if going in peak season as parking is in demand.

A beautiful undeveloped north west facing bay between Crantock and Holywell Bay. It’s never that packed and also dog friendly throughout the year which is a rarity in Cornwall! Be aware there's a bit of a walk - about 15-20 mins to get there along a track and there are no facilities.

Located on the west side of the Lizard this is another beautiful beach with white sand, dark red and green serpentine rock and lots of caves to explore at low tide. There’s also a lovely little cafe perched just above the beach which is the perfect place to enjoy a cream tea and soak up the view of the towering rock stacks jutting out of the sea. Parking is National Trust and be aware it's quite a little hike downhill to reach the beach from the parking area.

Located at the mouth of the River Camel, 2km north of Padstow is this stunning white sand beach which, given that you have to undertake a little bit of a walk to reach ensures it's not too crowded even in peak season. It sits directly opposite Dammer Bay and from the beach you can enjoy a 25 minute stroll into Padstow for refreshments.

Sandy Acres privately owned carpark is the place to park to access one of the most beautiful and vast expanses of beach which stretches between Hayle and Gwithian. The beach is so long it's never crowded and the sand is gloriously golden and soft! Great dunes to walk along and a locals favourite for kite surfing. Be aware you will need cash for the parking meter (as far as I'm aware) and also that the track is potholed and bumpy - still fine for a regular car but be careful! It's also possible to access this stretch of beach by parking at Gwithian Beach which is to the East and is National Trust managed and no potholes to negotiate!

5 mins drive away is Heartlands Mining Museum which is well worth a visit especially if you have children. There is great adventure playground and diaspora gardens featuring plants from Australia, South Africa, North and South America & New Zealand where many Cornish emigrated to.

This little museum is a recent discovery by my father who was looking for something to do with his four year old grandson! It's a locomotive museum run by enthusiasts for children and adults alike!

You can reach this landmark on foot from the cottage by turning right out of the cottage and walking along the road for about 25 metres after which there is a turning into the driveway of a detached house. It feels a little weird as you are walking through someones drive but its a public right of way and around the back of the house there is access to a public footpath. Take the path which is narrow and leads up and you will be led all the way to the top of the Carn past standing stones and the remains of an ancient settlement which can still be just about seen in the rings of tufted grass which remain. make sure to wear wellies as the path can be boggy. You'll be rewarded with an invigorated feeling and views all the way to the sea!
