Trädgårdsföreningen, is a beautiful park located in the heart of the city by Central Station. You have to see the rose garden with over 2,500 roses (more than 1,200 different types!), a rock garden, a charming cafe, and, my favorite, the Palm House! The Palm House is a giant greenhouse built in 1878. It is, in my opinion, the most Instagrammable spot in all of Gothenburg. I was only in town for five days yet I found myself here at least three different times because I could not get enough of it.

During your stay in Gothenburg, might I suggest you take a quick ferry ride to Denmark via Stena Line. There are also ferries to Kiel, Germany as well as to Poland from this terminal. Take a day trip to these destinations and live on the edge a little.

Inside this building, you will find the largest fish market in Gothenburg. Even if you're not a lover of fish, it's an impressive market . The slightly atypical architecture makes it even more attractive. The fish market is located inside a building reminiscent of a church in the Gothic style, hence the name. The fishing church was built in 1874 and contains both a fish market and two restaurants, where of course fish dishes are served.

Gothenburg is part of a chain of archipelagos, over 8,000 to be exact! The draw to West Sweden would be this amazing feature! There are over 8,000 islands basically next door to Gothenburg and it is a great area to go on a road trip. The major tourist attractions are: Marstrand, Orust, and Tjorn. The pictures I included were from my trip to Höno and Öckero. There are too many to name but those you cannot leave this part of Sweden, asides from the aforementioned are: Grundsund, Fjallbacka, Smögen, Lysekil, and Tanum which are all part of my constantly growing list of West Sweden islands to visit. It's easy to get taken by these sights!

The Pier offers not only stunning and breathtaking views of the Göta Canal, but also you can take local ferries to different areas like Massthugget, Lindholmen (home of Chalmers Uniceristy and the Science Park), Eriksberg as well as a ferry to get to other archipelagos. The terminal building, which was designed by Sweco and features gates for trams and buses, as well as docking space for boats, will serve as an ideal connection hub for all target groups. The hub handles around 12,000 travelers per day, which also places stringent demands on visibility, clarity, and not least security and safety during the dark hours of the day and the year.

Liseberg first opened during the 1923 Göteborg Jubilee, but soon emerged as one of Sweden’s most popular destinations. Some three million visitors make the pilgrimage each year... Liseberg is a really nice amusement park for children of all ages, big and little alike. On the ferris wheel, you get breathtaking views of the city. It's phenomenal! They have seasonal attractions, which are a must-see. In October, they have a haunted house and during the winter, they light up the entire park with lights. It's a truly majestic Winter Wonderland. Regardless of the season, Liseberg is a place you must visit!

If you want to enjoy nature in Gothenburg, take the direction to the park, Slottsskogen (tram stop: Linnéplatsen). Slottsskogen park is not really far from the city center and just in front of the Botaniska garden. Slotskogen is the largest park in Gothenburg, and probably also one of the most popular. Here you will find large grass areas where you can settle down for a nice picnic. There are also plenty of trails where you can let yourself get a little lost, and plenty of eateries, as well as places where you can play mini-golf and much more. Take a look at the map of the park and see the many possibilities. In the park there is a nice zoo with penguins, moose, ponies, rabbits, swans, and even more animals to see. The park is really vast so be sure to check a map. In the Children's Zoo , which is a mini zoo for small children, where they can come in and touch the goats and look at different animals - primarily farm animals. You will find the Children's Zoo in the middle of the park near pony rides. Don't forget the Deer Park , which is a small free zoo with slightly different local animals. Slotskogen also has an absolutely fantastic playground for children of all ages - the playground Plikta which is located in the northern part of the park. Here there were swings, slides, trampolines, things to climb in, sand dunes, a place to play with water, and much more. In the northeastern part of Slotskogen you will find the Natural History Museum in Gothenburg. The museum seemed to us very child-friendly in that there are lots of animals to look at (stuffed of course), and was therefore pointed loose with a lot of questioning and curious fingers. At the Natural History Museum, you get the opportunity to see animals from all over the world up close, and it gave you the opportunity to talk a little about the different animals. However, you must be aware that you must of course not touch the exhibitions, which can be a little difficult to understand for very young children. On the edge of the park is the Natural History Museum. Don't miss seeing the huge stuffed blue whale. And in fact, this is the only place in the world where you have the opportunity to see a true blue whale this way. The stuffed whale is more than 16 meters long and weighs over 25 tons, and fills most of the large exhibition space - and rightly so.

Offering a 360-degree bird’s eye view of the city, truth be told, the hike up to the top is pretty steep! Dating all the way back to the end of the 17th-century, this domed structure is characterised by its crown roof and has 4-5 meter thick walls.

The prestigious museum opened in 1923, in time for Gothenburg’s International Exhibition. You can come to appreciate works from across Europe painted from the 1400s to the 21st century. But the museum’s acclaim comes from its 19th-century Nordic art, by famous and familiar names like Edvard Munch, Peder Severin Krøyer, Bruno Liljefors and Anders Zorn. The French collection deserves your time for its works by Gauguin, Picasso, Monet, Chagall and van Gogh. And for lovers of the Renaissance and Baroque there are pieces by van Dyck, Rembrandt, Rubens and Jacob Jordaens.

Beginning at Kungsportsbron, the bridge over the canal, and slicing diagonally through the city is Gothenburg’s broad and princely avenue. It was laid out in the 1800s to link a new upmarket neighborhood southeast of the center with the old fortified city. For shopping, nightlife, and dining Avenyn is the cream of the crop: In the daylight hours you can potter around the chain stores, high-end fashion houses, and one-of-a-kind boutiques, and after dark, you can paint the town red at all manner of eateries and nightspots. Bring a sense of adventure too, as the connecting streets like Södra vägen merit a detour, while to the west rise the Neoclassical mansions of the posh Vasa neighborhood.

Food scene

For those looking for the opportunity to delve further into Gothenburg’s foodie scene (or are simply looking to escape some bad weather!), I highly recommend a venture through the Saluhallen. Free to visit, the Market Hall is filled with produce from all over the world. Home to spices, coffee, and local delicacies, in total there are over forty shops and stalls! I recommend finding a place inside for lunch.

Neighborhoods

Haga is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Gothenburg, full of beautiful shops, cafes, and cobblestone streets. It is the perfect place to leisurely stroll around and spend a few relaxing hours perusing, shopping or taking a fika. Haga, which is a really cozy area with unique Swedish wooden buildings. The district has a very special atmosphere, and the main street Haga Nygateen is full of cozy sidewalk cafes and small specialty shops where you can otherwise just shop loose. It is obvious that you go out to try boring Swedish coffee when you are in Haga, because the area is known especially for its fantastic cinnamon snails. If you are in doubt about what fika means, then I can tell you that it is another word for “coffee and cake” and that was exactly what we got. You have to try Café Husaren, which is one of the street's best cafés, and there the cinnamon rolls cover the entire plate!

Backaplan has a unique location just north of Gothenburg's city center. The infrastructure around the area is very good and it is easy to get to Backaplan regardless of the mode of transport. The road network is well developed around the area and Hjalmar Brantingsplatsen, which is Backaplan's stop, is Gothenburg's second-largest hub with a very large number of bus lines and four tram lines. Even those who travel on foot or by bicycle can easily get to Backaplan. There are plenty of cycles and walking paths to the area.

Nordstan is located in Gothenburg's city centre, connected to the Gothenburg Central Station and the Nils Ericson Terminal by an underground pedestrian tunnel, and to the Lilla Bommen marina and the Gothenburg Opera house by sheltered walkways. The shopping centre also offers parking space to 2,700 cars. Just outside Nordstan are three different tram stops on three sides of the shopping center, making it easy to reach Nordstan by public transportation. A majority of the visitors use public transportation. If almost all of the visitors had used cars (as it is for many shopping centres outside city centres), around 8,000 parking places would be needed and this would need more parking space area than shop area.
