Neighborhoods

A working waterfront, watch the fishermen come in with their daily catch! Visit famous Thurston’s restaurant overlooking Bass Harbor. Local beach off of Lopaus Point Road also overlooks Bass Harbor. From the cottage take a left and take an immediate right on Bernard Road. To see the lobster boats and wharf go left at stop sign. For Thurston’s restaurant take a right. Bernard is located on the southwestern part of Mount Desert Island, is often referred to as being on the “quiet” or “back” side of the island because it is on the opposite side from the well known and busier town of Bar Harbor. Bernard, and the local vicinity, has the rugged and easy-going manner of a Downeast fishing village. There is plenty of local character with lots of coastal photo opportunities. The harbor itself is shared by both Bass Harbor and Bernard and either place offers great views of the other. Each side offers its photo perspective advantages depending upon the time of day and lighting. Neither are actually separate towns but are both part of the municipality of Tremont. Above information taken from Acadia Magic website.

Tremont, Maine, part of Hancock County, includes Bass Harbor, Bernard, Gotts Island, Seal Cove, and West Tremont. These are small quiet fishing communities with many nice coastal and interior views. The approximate population is 1,563. This southwestern part of Mount Desert Island is often referred to as being on the “quiet” or “back” side as it is on the opposite side of the busiest and more commercial section of Mount Desert Island which includes the well known Bar Harbor resort area. Bass Harbor, Maine, is a perfect example of a quaint little fishing village on what is called the “quiet” or “back” side of Mount Desert Island - home of a large portion of Acadia National Park. It is located on the southwestern part of the island, on the opposite side of an inlet from Bernard. Many people are surprised to hear that Bass Harbor and Bernard are not separate towns at all but are both part of the municipality of Tremont. Bass Harbor is filled with coastal photo opportunities like lobster boats and other yachts, lobster traps and buoys, winding roads, and buildings characteristic of the area. The famous Bass Harbor Head Light is located here on park land a short distance southeast of the harbor. This is one of the most photographed and recognized lighthouses in America. Seal Cove, located on the southwestern side of Mount Desert Island and part of the municipality of Tremont, Maine, has a public boat launch area and a nice spot for a quiet picnic that overlooks the harbor. There are often a variety of lobster boats and yachts anchored just off the shore which makes for a particularly romantic setting when there is early morning fog. Since this is on the western shore of Mount Desert Island, sunsets can often be spectacular and the cove provides some protection from the wind when it is coming from the East or South. This is one of those sweet spots off the beaten path on the island. Acadia National Park is a short distance away to the North, East, and Southeast. While visiting, please keep in mind that about 90% of the properties in this cove are privately owned and not part of the park. The only public portion is the boat launch area. Above information taken from Acadia Magic website. Photo location from Algerine Coast which is located on the Cape Road, Route 102 in Seal Cove.

Somesville, Maine, the oldest settlement on Mount Desert Island (dating from 1761), is a picturesque little village located at the northern end of Somes Sound - once referred to as a fjord but now is categorized as a "fjard." Somesville is actually not a township at all but part of the municipality of Mount Desert, Maine, whose office is located in Northeast Harbor. There is gorgeous scenery here year round including beautiful views of Somes Sound, its inlets, and the mountains to the east. The Acadia Repertory Theatre (207) 244-7260 is one of its main attractions. Acadia National Park is close by to the east and south. Above information taken from Acadia Magic website.

Bar Harbor, Maine, originally incorporated as Eden on February 23, 1796, has a world renowned ambiance that blends seashore community, Down East character, and the famous Maine Lobster. Part of Hancock County, it is the best known town on Mount Desert Island with an approximate population of 5,235 (per year 2010 census) and 28,800 scenic acres. Included within the municipality are the villages of Hulls Cove, Salisbury Cove, and Town Hill, as is a large portion of Acadia National Park. Because of this, people often refer to it all as being part of the same concept and place, as well as the same state of mind. Bar Harbor sits in a particular coastal part of the State referred to as “Down East” Maine. This term has a long history dating back over two hundred years when large schooners, filled with goods on their way back to England or elsewhere in Europe, had to sail down wind to the east from the larger population centers like Boston, Philadelphia, and New York - hence, Down East. While visiting, you will often hear the tell-tail sound of a “Mainer” speaking with that special Down East accent where the “r” sound is being dropped. Bar Harbor is pronounced like “Bah-Hah-Bah” and lobster sounds like “lob-stuh!” (You may want to begin practicing now.) Above information was takrn from Acadia Magic website

Over the years, Northeast Harbor, Maine, has become famous as much for its summertime residents as it has for its beautiful and protected harbor full of exclusive yachts and sailing vessels. You may be surprised to hear that it is actually not an official township by itself but rather part of the municipality of Mount Desert which covers 25,699 acres and has an approximate population of 2,053 (per the year 2010 census). It is located on the southern end of Mount Desert Island on the western side of the entrance to Somes Sound, which used to be designated as a fjord but now is more correctly called a fjard. Park land is close by for easy access. Above information taken from Acadia Magic website. Visit Thuya Gardens and Asticou Azalea Gardens.

Seal Harbor, Maine, located on the southeastern part of Mount Desert Island in Hancock County close to Acadia National Park, is a village in the town of Mount Desert which covers 25,699 acres and has an approximate population of 2,053 (per year 2010 census, a slight drop from the 2,109 reported in the 2000 census). Many sailboats, yachts, and lobster boats anchor in Seal Harbor adding to the seaside ambiance. A quaint and chic little village offering beautiful peaceful views, it has become the preferred summering place for many of the rich and famous. For “less affluent” locals and visitors alike, the public beach (next to Route 3) offers a less crowded alternative to the better known Sand Beach near the beginning of the Park Loop Road. Seal Harbor Beach is a popular spot. Above taken from Acadia Magic website.

Thunder Hole is the place in Acadia National Park to experience the thunder of the sea against the rocky shores of Maine! On calm days you may wonder what the fuss is all about. But wait until the waves kick up a few notches. Thunder Hole is a small inlet, naturally carved out of the rocks, where the waves roll into. At the end of this inlet, down low, is a small cavern where, when the rush of the wave arrives, air and water is forced out like a clap of distant thunder. Water may spout as high as 40 feet with a thunderous roar! Hence the name: Thunder Hole. Thunder Hole GPS for Parking: Latitude 44.321011; Longitude -68.189330 Accessibility: Upper level viewing area, restrooms and parking is wheelchair accessible. Taken from Acadia Magic Website

A beautiful butterfly park with amazing gardens on the ocean. Located in Southwest Harbor less than 10 minutes from the cottage. The Butterfly Garden at the Charlotte Rhoades Park was established in 1998 to promote conservation education and gardening instruction in the community. Volunteers work throughout the season with school children and adults to learn more about butterfly habitat and observation. Suggestive of butterfly wings, the garden beds were designed by Bar Harbor landscape architect Bruce John Riddell and includes perennials, annuals, and shrubs that are butterfly host plants.
