Dog-Friendly Parks in the Region

When it comes to off-leash parks in Victoria, this is by far the most popular, especially when the sun shines. You'll meet every breed and most are very social. Whether you enjoy the beach and through sticks for your dog or just like to stay in the park, you will find this the perfect experience for both of you.

The largest park in the Saanich area, Mount Douglas offers a spectacular 360-degree view of the area around Victoria, including east to Haro Strait, north and west through Saanich, and south towards downtown Victoria. Mount Douglas has a network of trails along its slopes and down to the beach area across Cedar Hill Road. The level of hiking is easy to moderate and dog friendly. With year-round activities and experiences, Mount Douglas Park provides inspiration and enjoyment to thousands of visitors each year. Take an easy stroll or make it a strenuous climb - there is much to see along the way. Enjoy the serenity of the ocean from the summit or the beach with a view of Mount Baker. Come to the park to enjoy the extensive trail systems named after the early settlers and farms in the area – it’s likely they established some of them. At 1.88km2 (188 hectares), the park contains the largest urban forest on the Saanich Peninsula. You can explore this forest on more than 21 km of trails. From one of the many parking areas, a variety of trails will lead you through the forest, around the base of the summit, up to the spectacular view at the mountain summit or down to the secluded, sandy beach. Local First Nations have used the area in and around Mount Douglas Park for thousands of years. The mountain was originally known as "Hill of Cedars". Fort Victoria, built-in 1843, had its cedar pickets milled using wood from the park. Governor James Douglas established this park in 1858 as a Government Reserve. Government work projects initiated in the Depression years led to the construction of Churchill Road. It also had a teahouse, washroom, and "crew huts". The City of Victoria took over the land on September 30, 1889, from the Province it became Mount Douglas Park. In 1992, Saanich began looking after managing the park. Over the years it has grown from 1.5 km2 (150 ha) to 1.83 km2 (183 ha) and the park will continue to be managed as a natural area.

The Beach Trail to Witty's Lagoon begins from the Nature Centre and passes the scenic Sitting Lady Falls, before descending down towards the lagoon and following a fairly easy trail the beach. The beach area is beautiful and is a popular family beach where the low tide creates visible sand dunes surrounded by water shallow enough to walk to. The area is also popular amongst bird watchers as the lagoon provides shelter and an ecosystem of food for many different shorebirds. From the parking lot off of Metchosin Road, walk to the Nature Centre, taking a look at some of the photos they have posted and a look inside if they are open. Follow the trail past the Nature Centre and down the hill, walking the short distance to the bottom where you quickly arrive at a junction. Go right and onto the wooden bridge, along the Beach Trail. Sitting Lady Falls is located just under this bridge and can be seen from a side view via a platform several meters down the trail. The best viewpoint for the waterfall is opposite it by returning to the junction and going the other direction along the Lagoon Trail. After viewing the waterfall and canyon, continue along the Beach Trail as it continues to descend down some stairs and then along a dirt trail. The trail opens up and passes through a section of the marsh to the left until it reaches a small wooden bridge. Cross the bridge and follow the trail into the forest as it meanders through the trees, offering occasional views of Witty's Lagoon. Eventually, the trail passes along a section surrounded by bushes before crossing a wooden bridge and arriving at the beach. The beach area is popular during the summer as people picnic at the tables, lounge on the sand, and children run and play in the water. During the other seasons, the beach is much quieter but still a nice walk or popular place for bird watchers. Return via the same route you came, leaving the beach area and following the trail through the forest. Cross the wooden bridge and follow the trail as it heads uphill and along the wooden railings, past Sitting Lady Falls, and over the bridge. If you didn't see the viewpoint for the waterfall, go right for a short side trip, then return via the wide trail, uphill the hill to the Nature Centre where you began your hike. Driving Directions Witty's Lagoon is located in the Metchosin area, west of Victoria. To drive to the start of the Beach Trail at the Nature Centre take a left onto McKenzie Ave and follow to northbound Highway #1. Take Exit #10: View Royal / Colwood and as you exit, stay to the left so that you follow the exit that passes under the highway. Continue driving along what is now the Island Highway, then turns into Sooke Road about 2.5 km later. Turn left onto Metchosin Road and follow it for about 7 km. As you near the park, watch for signs for Witty's Lagoon and the Nature Centre. Turn left into the parking lot for the Nature Centre and the trail begins at the far end of the lot. Public Transportation It is possible to take the bus to Witty's Lagoon also. It takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes and requires you to take three buses, the #30: Carey, #50: Langford, and #54: Metchosin. Dog-Friendly Dogs are allowed off-leash and under control on the trails to the beach at Witty's Lagoon. However, from June 1 - September 15, dogs must be on a leash at the beach area and are only allowed to pass through (ie. not allowed to stay). Please abide by these rules to keep park trails dog-friendly. Also, please ensure to pick up after your dog and remove all excrement from the park. Toilets There are pit toilets near the Nature Centre at the start of the trail and also at the beach area near the picnic tables.

Island View Beach & Park is minutes north on Hwy.17. Turn right at Island View Road and follow to the end. You can walk the beach or follow the path just above the beach. There is a breath-taking view of Mount Baker and the San Juan Islands also. This is a popular place, on a windy day, for kiters to tweet their skills and also a perfect spot to put in you kayak for a day on the water. Just 17 kilometers from downtown Victoria, Goldstream Provincial Park lies amid the splendor of an old-growth temperate rain forest. There you can see a world-class salmon-spawning stream with thousands of Chum Salmon returning between October and December. It doesn't stop there. During this amazing time of year, you can visit the park and it's always-changing Visitor Centre. The centre is named after Freeman King, an early naturalist who probably reached more children than any other naturalist on Vancouver Island. The centre is at the mouth of the river, overlooking the Goldstream estuary, nestled among giant black cottonwoods and red alder trees. You will find travel information, a bookstore/gift shop, a wildlife viewing platform, coffee and goodies, a raffle, and always-friendly, knowledgeable staff. Park in the main-picnic-area parking lot off the Island Highway at Finlayson Arm Road. Hiking Trails in the park take you from valley floor to ridges, even to the top of Mt. Finlayson. Enjoy two different waterfalls, an abandoned gold mine, and incredible views. Male Chum Salmon are often wounded in battles for the best locations near spawning females Don't miss one of the largest concentrations of Bald Eagles anywhere in Canada feasting on the spawned-out salmon carcasses from December to February. Watch for the up-coming Eagle Extravaganza Programs!

Panama Flats Trail Loop is a 2.1 kilometer lightly trafficked loop trail located beside Hyacinth Park in Saanich, that offers the chance to see wildlife. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching. Dogs are welcome to use this trail but must be kept under control. The flat dirt loop trail along the small dike around Panama Flats pond fills with water and birds in the fall/winter/spring seasons. It's possible to walk through the middle of the pond on a dike at low water. The trails can be muddy during the wet seasons. There are no toilets available. Colquitz Creek runs the length of this park.

This is my favorite path for a daily walk with my best friend. The waterway flows from the south end of Beaver Lake to eventually discharge into Portage Inlet at Cuthbert Holmes Park. People can walk, run or cycle five km north on the trail until it connects with the Royal Oak Trail at Brydon Park, at the south end of Royal Oak Shopping Centre. The south portion of the trail is arguably more scenic and shaded from the sun. On this part of the trail (accessed by crossing the McKenzie walk overpass), follow the meandering route of the creek until you reach Hyacinth Park, near Marigold Road. The trail emerges from the shade after Hyacinth Park as it makes its way toward Panama Flats and nearby Panama Hill Park, which boasts Garry oak meadows as well as some First Nations archeological sites.

The Beacon Drive-In is a classic 50’s style diner serving up Burgers, Fries, Shakes, & Soft serve ice cream for take-out with outdoor tables & umbrellas available. Or just stroll over to Beacon Hill Park and enjoy the peacocks, numerous ponds filled with ducks, and the Animal Petting Zoo. The Beacon is located at 126 Douglas Street, we are across from the 75-hectare Beacon Hill Park. Our most popular menu item is the ice cream, which comes in a variety of dips and flavors and has held the title of Victoria’s Best Ice Cream for 25 years running! Founded in 1958 by Bill Pistol and Bob McMillan, it has come to be known as a "Victoria institution" for its soft-serve ice cream, friendly service, and local charm. Part of the Beacon Drive In's appeal stems from the fact that it has been in business for more than 60 years with very few changes. The Beacon has changed ownership only twice over its long history and current father & son owners Gus and Peter Loubardeas have strived to stay true to its roots as a family run business. Gus credits previous owner Jim Douglas, who ran the Beacon for 44 years, for instilling the unchanging character of the Drive-in. Jim had two mottoes for the business — "the customer always comes first" and "we don’t change." Aside from adding a few awnings, outdoor heaters, and a new colour scheme the building is still the same as it was when it was first built in 1958. Even the menu is largely unchanged, with Peter boasting that "our top 10 selling items have been the same for the past 40 years!” FUN FACT: The friendly character in Beacon Drive In's logo name is Beacon Bill, a stylized seagull dressed in rain gear and carrying a life preserver. Beacon Bill was conceived and illustrated by local Victoria artist Bill Hitchcox in 1978 upon the request of a local printer responsible for the menus. https://www.beacondrivein.ca Dog-Friendly Rated: 5/5

Moka House Coffee is a casual coffee shop located in Cook Street Village (close to Beacon Hill Park) that serves up a variety of delicious caffeinated beverages and an assortment of tasty eats. We believe that great communities need a ‘focal point’; a place to meet, laugh, enjoy good friends, and, most importantly, a good cup of coffee. Moka House is the place for great coffee and community. Stop by the best patio in the city for some people watching. Since 1996, Moka House has been the place for first dates, business meetings, lazy Sunday morning lattes, and everything in between! At Moka House, we brew heirloom Sacred Acre coffee on our espresso bar. Roasted in small batches, our Navigator Espresso is a stand-out favorite. Fido is welcome to join you at one of their pet-friendly outdoor tables while you enjoy your day. Moka House Coffee is open Monday through Saturday from 6:30 am to 11 pm, and Sunday from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm. https://mokahouse.com/

Whether it's a scenic harbour tour by boat or a quick trip from the West Bay to Fisherman's wharf, I recommend a ride on the harbour ferries. It's up to the captain and the fellow passengers if they'll take the dog, but I've never been turned down. Dog Friendly Rated: 5/5

The Ogden Point Breakwater is a popular walk near downtown Victoria that follows the cement structure from Dallas Road out towards on the Juan de Fuca Strait to a lighthouse on its furthest end. The area gives people an opportunity to see Victoria's busy harbour traffic as cruise ships, ferries, sailboats, float planes, helicopters, and more all pass through the area to reach Victoria. Wildlife is also commonly spotted along the breakwater, from seagulls playfully gliding through the harbour winds to seals hanging around as fishermen cast their lines from the edges of the breakwater.
