Among the narrow streets of the Borgo Antico, is an old fifteenth-century convent whose lime-washed vaults house the kingdom of Lillino Silibello, outspoken and kind, with a deep knowledge of the food culture and culinary traditions of his homeland. More than a restaurant, Cibus is a place of knowledge. Lillino has always interpreted its work in this context, considering food not only as a pleasure but also as a key to penetrate the culture and history of place. www.ristorantecibus.it; contact: +39.0831.388980

An uncomplicated place with good and authentic food, this family run restaurant offers simple but very tasty cuisine with no fuss. Don’t miss out on the antipasti as you will get many different seasonal dishes to try. It will be hard to manage a primo and secondo afterwards , we tend to chose either a pasta dish such as orecchiette with sugo di pomodoro or grilled meat & palatine fritter. Also try the rosso della casa (red wine from the cantina in Ceglie) served in a jug. Value for money in this Osteria is unbeatable. There is only indoor seating in the stone vaulted cantina but on hot summer nights this can be a relief! Booking advised; contact: +39 0831 377115

This restaurant in the center of Ceglie is very small and cozy and, with only a few seats inside, we recommend booking. The menu is typical of the local cuisine: antipasti, pasta such as orecchiette with meat sauce and and a mixed grilled meat. Reasonable priced and there are a few outdoor tables too. contact: +39 338 958 8252

The antipasta is a never-ending delight of dishes...hot, cold, meat, fish...mountain hams, light and delicious fried zucchini, aubergine parmigiana to name a few. If you make it beyond that, you will find yourself in the world of pasta, hand made at home, or out on the street in front of the restaurant. Watch Giuseppe's mama make orecchiette- "little ears"- the local specialty. Then on the grilled local meat or fish. wash it all down with local wine & finish with grappa or limoncello! The young chef Giuseppe and his partner Federica are wonderful hosts. This is a charming place with a terrace overlooking a "largo" just off the Piazza Plebiscito. contact: +39 324 905 4887

This lovely restaurant is tucked away in the heart of the Borgo Antico- the oldest part of Ceglie. It doesn't offer panoramic views across the countryside but instead offers a quiet and peaceful terrace within a small piazza, but with its own atmosphere. The tables outside are prefect on a summer's evening. The quiet position works very much in the restaurant's favour as it seems to be frequented by the local inhabitants who recognise it for the quality of food, more so than tourists seeking views and entertainment. The anti-pasta here is plentiful as ever & the service attentive. contact: +39 339 759 1381

Known as "48Food" this pizzeria on the edge of the main piazza has an indoor vaulted room, and tables outside perfect for a summer evening. There is a certain modern style here with wooden tables and chairs and pretty decorations, and the pizzas are some of the best around. They are thin and crispy with excellent choice of toppings, many of which are "Slow Food" authenticated. The value is exceptional and it is an easy place to eat both slightly earlier in the evening than some of the more traditional osteria and also later on into the evening. Piero and his team are incredibly welcoming and the service is courteous and fast. A lovely spot to watch the evening passeggiata in the Piazza.

This pizzeria is a favourite amongst the locals. Very good pizza baked in wood burning ovens, using seasoned olive wood, and a good menu of other typical pugliese dishes. If you are interested in football they have a large screen and projector which they turn on to watch the important matches! The service is always friendly and the atmosphere relaxed, yet buzzing as it is usually full unless it is early in the evening. Dining rooms both indoors and outdoors in the summer. It is always busy in summer and you may have to wait or book. Easy to park as it is outside town. Take-away pizzas too!! contact: +39 0831 388470

Forno San Lorenzo is far more than a bread shop, their selection of focaccia, with many toppings- onion, cheese, pomodoro & many others – produced fresh all day long – is wonderful. A fabulous selection of almond and chocolate biscuits and little cakes is always a temptation! At lunchtime they have a few tables for dining & also offer a lot of typical dishes for take out, perfect for eating back at your trullo later. A small selection of local wines too. Antonio and his team are both charming and genuinely welcoming and the decor is trendy and modern. A delight!

Caffè Centrale is the "go to" place to buy fantastic local Biscotti Cegliese, Pasticcini di Mandorle and crunchy savoury Taralli spiced with black pepper or fennel: always fresh and tasty! Also a gelateria, their Spumone, a molded ice cream dessert usually containing chopped fruits and nuts, is well worth a try! The word spumone derives from the Italian "spuma" or foam. It has a lighter texture than plain ice cream because whipped cream is mixed into one of the layers. The Spumone from here are often served as desert in the local restaurants.

Is this the perfect Gelateria? Enzo, the owner is a passionate artisan. He will take you out the back to show you the ingredients he uses and explain the chemistry of gelato making! An array of flavours including the Sant'Oronzo (house speciality) with orange. Enzo uses seasonal flavours and the fruit ice creams are all made from fresh fruit. This will mean that you will not get the same flavours all year round! Highly recommended!

An ideal resting spot right in the heart of the centro storico of Ostuni, in the Piazza Cattedrale, with shaded outdoor tables, to relax and sip a coffee, wine, beer or aperitivo whilst watching the world go by! Also serves good platters of prosciutto, salami & formaggio with local bread and taralli in paper bags and cakes & gelato. One of the few places that stays open during the midday, so a very important find! From there wander on to catch some iconic Ostuni views all the way to the sea.

The Tenute Girolamo wine shop in Alberobello is the Punto Vendito (sales point) of the winery & vineyards situated near Martina Franca (see Entertainments & Activities). The shop is in a beautiful Trullo and the wines are all displayed and available for tasting and purchase. The Girolamo family combine research into modern approaches with traditional methods & produce elegant wines, sought after and appreciated the world over. Primitivo, Negroamaro, Aglianico, Fiano & Verdeca grapes amongst others. Or simply arrange a visit to the vineyard if you want more than a couple of bottles!

"Cental Bar" Alberobello: Great to sit down in the sun (or shade!) outside and have coffee, cakes, chocolates, ice-cream and relax, watching the world go by. The display cases inside are full of pastries, cakes and confections, all tempting. Lovely Ily coffee served in the traditional espresso & cappuccino cups (which are also on sale). Not on the very busy street in the heart of the "Trulli zone" so a better place to relax after visiting all the sights of Alberobello. Near the Basilica S.S. Cosma E Damiano and the Trullo Sovrano (see Sightseeing). there is a good deli just opposite towards the cathedral selling typical Puglian products: oils and jars of preserves etc. Open all day.

More than just a restaurant, the Rosticceria or Fornelli in Cisternino are all renowned as in fact, they are butchers shops with a forno (wood-fired oven). This one is perhaps the most famous. They serve their roasted meat at tables inside and outside the shops. Not only do you chose the meat first, there is more than simply beef, pork & lamb available, if you fancy trying goat or even donkey, you can! Also on offer are bombettes (cuts of meat wrapped around cheese), various sausages and tripe! Appetisers consist of local artisan cured meats, cheeses and vegetables preserved in olive oil. The chef, nicknamed "Ppruss" (chilli pepper, in the regional Italian), prepares tasty snacks and simple oven pizzas behind his bar. Very creative, with fresh, basic and local ingredients, and much better than the typical, expected "bar pizza" -- that is, what is normally available at lunchtime in Italy, when most wood-fired establishments do not operate. Imported beers and rustic, local wines available. Highly enjoyable conversation and learning experience. Be careful, as he will offer you a red hot chilli to taste!!

Delicious pasta and a warm welcome from friendly staff. You can eat inside as we did one night with friends and the decor is very relaxing and happily the room was warm and cozy as it was raining outside. Normally the outdoor terrazza is perfect, lunchtime or in the evening. They serve typical Pugliese food with a slight modern twist. Perhaps the service can be slow over the tourist season, so be prepared to sit back and wait, sipping a crisp Verdejo white, as there is plenty of opportunity for people watching in the magnificant square. contact: +39 080 483 7987

Il Gran Caffè Tito Schipa is a lovely venue at all times of the day and night...difficult to know whether to call it a restaurant, café, wine bar (>150 wines!), champagne & cocktail bar or live music venue, as it can be any and all of these, dependent on the time of day! With its gorgeous styling, and outside terrace with lovely lighting, looking out over the coastal plains and Centro Storico of Ostuni, it is not to be missed. Come for coffee and cakes in the daytime, when it is a café/ lounge or eat in the bistro-restaurant or simply drink an aperitif or prosecco with appetisers on the terrazza. Want to sit, be still, soak up the peace with gentle lounge music in the background, sipping wine in the late afternoon after wandering through stunning Ostuni? This is the place. Tucked under the back walls of the Cattedrale, the seating outside the bar is beanbags and glass top tables. Inside the beanbags are tucked under the ancient stone arches of the cantina. A very atmospheric place to spend the evening or just pop in for pre-dinner drinks. Excellent cocktails.

Newly opened by the dynamic duo, Francesco and Pierangelo, it is a cocktail bar, place to nibblele appetisers, eat a full meal, including beautiful wooden boards of imaginative local antipasti, soak up the atmosphere and listen to live music. It is a great addition to the vibrant local scene. The interior decor is gorgeous, there is outdoor seating, and a huge variety of cocktails and spirits..including Hendricks Gin and Fever Tree tonic...seriously not to be missed! Open late.

Essentials

Our nearest and best supermarket, you will find all the essentials here, and a really good selection of fresh produce: fruit and veg, milk and dairy, a great deli counter with excellent cold meats, salami and cheeses of all descriptions. The bread section does not have a massive selection (see Forno San Lorenzo in Food Scene), but enough. The meat counter is extensive. Plenty of biscuits, coffee, tea, jams, toiletries etc. Also a selection of wines, many of which are local and cheap. All reasonably priced. Don't be surprised by the speed at which the goods are checked out...you will have difficulty packing quickly enough! You need 2€ for the trolleys. Free car parking.

A good secure and easy to use cashpoint. Also they have English speaking staff if you need to have personal help. To enter the bank you need to pass through a security scan door and so must leave metal goods etc locked in the lockers in the vestibule.

This is an excellent local butchers, very close to the recommended salami shop, and there is a good greengrocers/fruit and vegetable shop in the same locale. Once again the locals queue here so be prepared to spend some time! The butchers all do good sausages (salsicce) and also local specialties called bombetta, or slightly fatty cuts of pork or beef wrapped around cheese, perfect for the BBQ! These were the occasional treat for the farmworkers and as firewood was scarce, were often eaten cooked by the butcher in communal fires (a tradition still practised locally especially in Cisternino where the Rosticceria (butchers where the meat is sold, cooked and eaten at the shop) are famous.

Ceglie Messapica is one of the oldest towns in Puglia and the fortified Castello was built in the middle ages on the site original Hellanistic (greek) acropolis and main Roman temples. The oldest remaining part is a Norman tower form the 11th century, 3 round medieval (Angevin) towers from the 12th & 13th centuries and the large dominant square 34m high 15th Century tower built by the Sanseverino family, that probably made the biggest historical mark on Ceglie. The castello has gradually started to be purchased by the state (Commune) and renovated. two wings (but not the medieval tower) can be visited, Tourist Info Office can give info re visits (Via Elia Pietro, very near the Castello).

The original structure was built in 1521 & in the 18th C was renovated by a Neapolitan architect, who gave the structure its present Baroque style. The facade is in Neoclassical style, with majolica dome. The plan of the church is a Greek cross, and the interior is decorated with frescoes by Domenico Carella, multicolored marble altars, including one dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, the patron of Ceglie. Inside the church there are many works of artistic value, a 16th C wooden crucifix, an 18th C statue of St. Anthony of Padua, the altarpiece of the Immaculate Conception. The frescoes include one of a biblical scene with a view of Ceglie from the 18th C, the oldest depiction of the town.

Joining la Piazza Plebiscito & la Piazza Sant'Antonio is the pretty stone-flagged Corso Garibaldi with cafés and shops, venue of the evening passeggiata. The Piazza Sant'Antonio, lies over the site of an ancient olive press & various archeological remains were discovered during recent renovations. From there Via San Rocco, with more bars shops and restaurants, leads up to the War memorial & Chiesa San Rocco. In this area there is a good greengrocers, Salami & cheese shop and butchers (see Essentials). It is also a good area to park for the centro storico (blue bays are paying at ticket meters, white free, yellow disabled only).

The viewpoint of Monterrone, adjacent to Via Muri, is an embankment located on the outside of the medieval port. It is a great overlook from which you can admire the view of the Itria Valley, the towns of Carovigno, Cisternino, Locorotondo and Ostuni. In 2012 the road and lookout were the subject of a redevelopment project, with the intention of creating a new pedestrian area, which led to the re-paving with stone flagstones of the entire area. Great place to stop for morning coffee in the sunshine, or an Aperol in the evening. A place to meet , drink and socialise with a lovely atmosphere. plenty of cafés and bars and places for a light lunch (see Food Scene and Night Life). The statue of Sant'Oronzo towers over the Piazza. It was erected by the architect Giuseppe Greco from Ostuni in 1771, with the effigy of the saint on the top. The column was built by demand of the worshippers of Ostuni, who wished to thank the saint who protected the town from the plague & famine of the 18th C. Ostuni is one of those cities that you can visit in a short time yet want to spend more time being there. The views from up on the hill are breathtaking and viewing the city at night from below is gorgeous. The old city is wonderful to walk around, with its tiny winding streets with the pure white houses on all sides. The lime wash not only gives lightness to the narrow alleys but originally is thought to have been applied as a disinfectant, to protect from the plague. Wander freely, get lost as you will always find your starting point! There are many bars, cafés & restaurants including the famous Riccardo Caffe (nighttime cocktail spot), Gipas 111 & Osteria del Temp Perso. Or tour by Ape!

Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage site: split into two quarters on two hilltops, there are about 400 trulli dating back to 17th – 18th centuries. In 1481 King of Naples granted the Count of Conversano feudal rights and ownership of a largely uninhabited area of the Trulli Murgia. He named this new territory 'Silva aut Nemus Arboris Belli'. From about 40 families initially, growth was encouraged and an inn, a mill, a public oven and a butcher shop were built in the 17th C. The peasants were poor with no legal rights, and were forced to build dry stone houses which could be easily be dismantled before tax inspections, as then they were only seen as temporary structures (no tax!).

Unique example of trullo-shaped church, but not "ancient"as it was built in the Twenties. The plan was drawn by Martino De Leonardis. The church has a Greek-crossed section, while the roof is a typical trullo one, ending with a square-based skylight. The four central pillars support round arches, where the side vaults rest on. The church has been completely restored in 2004. It is the natural place to find yourself after walking up to the highest point of the streets of Trulli from the main area at the base of the hill (Largo Martellotta). Return back vey wandering a different way through the maze of trulli-lined alleys!

Part of the Centro Storico of Martina Franca, this is the less well-trodden area beyond the main tourist "drag". The oldest part of town is called the Lama, where you can still see the pointed-roof buildings which are a local tradition. Wandering the lanes and alleys you pass eighteenth-century palaces, some of which are shabby with age, as well as humbler dwellings. The centre has a lived-in feel, with laundry and sometimes foodstuffs hung outside to dry. Although it is mostly pedestrianised, little three-wheeled ape trucks occasionally appear, plunging alarmingly down the narrow lanes; sheets of metal are screwed onto walls to protect buildings from the knocks of vehicles squeezing past!

"Trullo" probably comes from the Greek “tholos” dome, or from the Latin “trullum” tower. The thick dry stone walling and conical roofs are remarkable examples of prehistoric building techniques. Similar buildings are found in Turkey, Greece and Africa. The trulli, originally built by peasants farmers with stones taken from the fields to allow agriculture, were grouped in Contrada or family areas. Each trullo had a function, storing tools, animals, fruit, wine or olive presses. With bread ovens & indoor fires the families could sleep in shelter, cool from the heat of the summer sun and warm in winter. Wander the Contrada to see abandoned trulli: where better to get a feel for Trullo living?

Beautiful linen apparel, accessories and home linens. "Annalisa Surace started this project with the pioneering intent to explore a fusion between craftsmanship and design following sustainable environmental values. IJO’s aim is to promote the recovery of traditional processing techniques with sustainable production in small workshops in Apulia. IJO’ tells the story of unique pieces where precious fabrics, realized on ancient wooden looms, are shaped on the body, giving birth to simple, geometric shapes, inspired by architecture. The idea is to use cloth without cuts, completed with couture tailoring so that every woman can house and live the garment as unique, as hers." www.ijodesign.com

This tiny lacework shop is in the Piazza V.Emanuele, Locorotondo, just beyond the Tourist Info Office and La Teverna del Duca (coffee spot!). Stepping inside is stepping back in time to the age of our grandmothers and generations before them. Here you find the intricate and beautiful handmade lace and embroidery that Nunzi Spellato and other local women still make. They also restore ancient lacework. It is a real treasure trove. You can purchase stunningly intricate crocheted earrings, lace handkerchiefs, key fobs, or lacework garments. "To refind past times" indeed!

A tiny shop displaying the artwork of Laurenzia Crescenzo who is a miniature painter capturing the essence of the land of the Valle D'Itria in exquisite detail with a modern and yet ancient feel. Her murals adorn the walls of the building, her artwork is for sale inside...everything from postcards to prints and originals and also the most lovely model trulli we have found in the region. As she says " a hand-made object today will become an antique tomorrow". in other words, beautiful & authentic "souvenirs"- a rarity!

"Il Fischio" is a treasure trove of beautiful, authentic terracotta Puglian whistles or Fischietti. The tradition of making clay whistles is ancient, probably first arising in Egypt. They are found worldwide, here in Puglia they are delightfully crafted and often brightly painted. Generally in Europe, in the numerous spring festivals, children are donated whistles imitating the song of the nightingale or the cuckoo, the latter has always been considered the bird who "wakes up and brings back to nature". In Italy the custom is also that the men "claim" a girl by giving her a whistle! Lovely gifts, but don't forget that to be able to "whistle", they need a little water inside!
