*Top Recommendation - One of the Seven Wonders of Oregon. Beautiful Views. Hiking. Great place for photos. About an Hour's Drive East. The hills are distinguished by varied stripes of red, tan, orange, white and black. The Painted Hills Unit also contains a diverse assemblage of leaf fossils aging 39-30 million years old called the Bridge Creek Flora, and a small outcropping of rock containing animal fossils from 30-27 million years ago. Five walking/hiking trails available ranging in length from 0.25 miles to 1.3 miles and has a shaded picnic area. The yellows, golds, blacks, and reds of the Painted Hills are beautiful at all times of the day, but are best lit for photography in the late afternoon.

Scenic Drive. Just south of Prineville it is a beautiful winding drive with breathtaking views. It is peaceful and beautiful. The river winds and flows through the canyon and the hillsides cut by glaciers are amazing. This area is just beautiful and should be seen by everyone who enjoys the outdoors and scenic drives.

Some of the best hiking around with amazing views. Variety of trails from easy to challenging, great for families, has incredible rock formations including the Monkey Head. Known for some of the best rock climbing around. While rock climbing you will enjoy scenic views of deep river canyons. There are several thousand different rock climbs in the park. More than a thousand are bolted routes. There is also offer miles of mountain biking trails. Along your trip through the canyon, you might see golden eagles, prairie falcons, mule deer, river otter and beaver. Weddings groups of no more than 50 people can reserve the North Point Amphitheater space by calling the park office. For other events please contact the Park Manager or Park Ranger to see if you will need a permit. Steins Pillar Trail is a 3.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Prineville that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from May until October. Dogs and horses are also able to use this trail. Parking is available and is free. No restrooms or running water available.

Walk in the shadows of lichen-covered basalt cliffs as you zigzag up and out of the river canyon to spectacular views of Central Oregon. The namesake “chimney” basalt rock formation is viewable. Park benches available as you make your way up to the top. Open year round but really nice in the spring or fall when a little moisture has tamped down the dust. No fees to park or hike. And the trail is near Chimney Rock campground with toilets and potable water near campsite 8. Pets are allowed under owner control & owners must pack out any waste!
