This is the best Indian food we've ever had. It has an amazing atmosphere: people write compliments on the walls, they play Bollywood movies and lively Indian music, and the owners really love their customers. The food is from Punjab, colorful, and full of flavor, and got high marks from Michelin. The $12 Butter Chicken is the best!

This is our favorite pizza delivery place. It's truly a hole in the wall, but for $12 you can get a delicious large, 2 topping pizza to carry out. Their caramelized are amazing. They don't have any seating, it's all delivery or carryout.

Make sure you go here at least once during your stay. This is an unbelievable indoor foodie market. Part grocery stands, restaurant stands. everything from milk products and ice cream from Amish farms, to fresh bakery bread, fresh seafood, free-range meats, artisan cheeses, homemade soups, to cocktails and scrumptious brunch and lunch foods. Some of our favorites are Neopol Savory Smokery (smoked salmon sandwiches, unbelievable whitefish salad., etc), TaKorean (yummy Mexican/Korean fusion), Panorama Bakery (authentic French pastries) and Peregrine Espresso (artisan coffee). There's also a place for kids to run around outside when it's nice out. It gets pretty crowded on the weekends.

This place serves local, seasonal American fare. Often frequented by the Who's Who of Washington, the menu changes often and everything's delicious. The chef especially has a talent for preparing seasonal vegetables and hand cut french fries! It's great for a delicious late night dessert or cocktail. It is a little pricier at $20+ a plate, but worth it.

The name is misleading...this is the best Chinese restaurant in DC! Legend has it, it was constructed for a group of Chinese government officials visiting Washington and requiring non-Americanized Chinese food. Apparently, they were put up in the Holiday Inn next door and dined downstairs. Unfortunately, they don't deliver, but it's well worth travelling there.

We are blessed in this neighborhood with some wonderful food! The owner is Mexican and this place is the real deal. Try Mexican specialties like tacos "Al Pastor" (pork, pineapple & cilantro), "Lengua" tacos (cow tongue - sounds gross but it tastes like tender beef), or my favorite, the best fish tacos I've ever had. They also sell burritos that are very similar to Chipotle's. The menu is huge, the portions are huge, and you can get huge margaritas too! The prices are reasonable too, you can generally eat for $8 or $9.

Our ultimate favorite restaurant. It's the most authentic Thai place we've ever eaten at, and has even impressed guests who used to live in Thailand! For an unforgettable experience, dine in the basement next to the kitchen. It's a hole in the wall, very quirky, they only serve prix fixe meals (they choose the menu and charge a flat $35 per person), and they don't serve wine. Believe me, the food is worth it!!

Ocopa is arguably the best Peruvian restaurant in DC. It's a little pricey at $25 a plate, but the experience is worth it! The food is incredibly exotic and executed with a fine hand. Famous Chef Jose Andres cooks up some of the very best Mediterranean food in DC. The flavors are a fusion from Turkey, Greece and Lebanon, and everything is served in small portions to share. It's one of the very few places I've been where absolutely everything on the menu is to die for. Plates are $6-$15 a piece, with 3-4 plates constituting a meal for 1 person. This place has a 1-2 hour wait on the weekends a reservation is recommended. It's just 3 metro stops from the house.

This is our favorite place to take the family for breakfast! The bagels and cream cheese are made fresh on site, and they offer crazy delicious coffee and bagel sandwiches (salmon, reuben, brisket, etc). Bagels are $1.50 each or $5-$8 for a sandwich. This little French restaurant is reasonably priced, beautiful, and the owners are so hospitable. They serve traditional French comfort foods, nothing too fancy or expensive, the kind Blaise and I ate as children growing up in France. They're from the part of France where crepes are from, so they have a special section on the menu for savory and dessert crepes (they call them "galettes"). Savory galettes run about $10, entrees are around $20. It's not the best place to bring children since it's a quiet, romantic atmosphere. They also serve some of the most tasty desserts on H Street.

This place was voted DC's Best Pies 7 years in a row. They sell pie whole or by the slice. My favorites are sour cherry and strawberry rhubarb, and their most popular flavor is the "Baltimore Bomb". They also have a small selection of savory pies (I love the Steak Mushroom Onion & Gruyere). If you eat in, they will serve your savory slice with a small side salad too. Slices are $6.50 to $7.50 a piece.

If you've never had Ethiopian food, this is the place to try it! It's delicious, and quite the authentic experience: you share a common dish (various flavorful stewed toppings arranged on a large piece of spongy bread called injera) and eat with your hands, using the bread to scoop your food. Prices are reasonable at around $15 per person, and the portions are large.

Eastern Market is the largest indoor/outdoor market in DC, featuring a sumptuous selection of local vegetables, fruits, dairy products, meats, fish, cheeses and prepared foods. Our favorite way to get down here is to bike, because there are bike stands everywhere, and the monuments and museums are so spread out that bikes enable you to save your legs, save parking fees, AND see twice as much as you would on foot. We once took a family with small children, saw every single monument, and stopped for a picnic on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, all within 4 hours, and got home in time for naps! There are several dedicated bike lanes between our neighborhood and the Mall, plus it's legal to ride on the sidewalk in our section of DC, so it's perfectly safe even for small children. In the winter months, consider taking an Uber car rather than the Metro.
